Use gentle ihr commands when speaking to several children and polite Sie commands when making requests during check-ups.

German phrases for gentle group guidance

  • Ihr Kleinen, setzt euch auf die Matte.

    Little ones, sit down on the mat.

    Setzt euch is the command for several people to sit down. Ihr Kleinen is an affectionate way to address young children.

  • Ihr beiden, kommt her zum Kuscheln.

    Both of you, come here for a cuddle.

    Ihr beiden addresses exactly two children. Kommt her means 'come here'; zum Kuscheln means 'for a cuddle'.

  • Ihr Kleinen, schaut euch den Teddy an.

    Little ones, look at the teddy.

    Schaut euch ... an is a natural way to ask several children to look at something. The prefix an goes at the end.

  • Ihr beiden, klatscht in die Hände.

    Both of you, clap your hands.

    German uses the expression in die Hände klatschen for 'clap your hands'.

  • Herr Doktor, schauen Sie sich bitte die Haut meines Babys an.

    Doctor, please look at my baby's skin.

    Herr Doktor addresses a male doctor; use Frau Doktor for a female doctor. Meines Babys means 'my baby's'.

  • Schwester, wiegen Sie bitte mein Baby.

    Nurse, please weigh my baby.

    Schwester is a traditional address for a female nurse. In modern settings, using the person's name, such as Frau Müller or Herr Müller, is often more natural.

  • Herr Doktor, zeigen Sie mir bitte die Wachstumskurve.

    Doctor, please show me the growth chart.

    Zeigen Sie is a polite command. Mir means 'to me' here. Use Frau Doktor for a female doctor.

  • Schwester, geben Sie mir bitte ein sauberes Handtuch.

    Nurse, please give me a clean towel.

    Geben Sie mir bitte means 'please give me'. You can replace Schwester with the nurse's name.

Commands to several children: ihr

Use the ihr verb form and leave out the subject ihr. A separate address such as Ihr Kleinen or Ihr beiden can come before the command. Add bitte and use a warm tone to make instructions gentler.

Polite commands: Sie

For a polite command, put the verb before Sie. Keep Sie and capitalize it. This form works for one adult or several adults. Bitte makes the request more courteous.

Reflexive words and separable verbs

Some expressions need a reflexive word: euch for several children and sich with polite Sie. With separable verbs such as anschauen, the prefix moves to the end of the command.
