Together Before Bed in German

Practise warm, everyday German for getting changed, sitting down together and enjoying bedtime closeness. These phrases use informal du when speaking to one child.

German phrases for together before bed

  • Ich ziehe mich um.

    I am getting changed.

    Sich umziehen means to get changed. With ich, use mich.

  • Du ziehst dich mit meiner Hilfe um.

    You are getting changed with my help.

    With du, use dich. Mit meiner Hilfe means 'with my help'.

  • Papa zieht sich auch um.

    Dad is getting changed too.

    Papa takes the same verb form and reflexive pronoun as er: zieht sich um.

  • Wir ziehen uns fürs Bett um.

    We are getting changed for bed.

    With wir, use uns. Fürs is short for für das.

  • Ich setze mich neben dich.

    I am sitting down next to you.

    Sich setzen describes taking a seat. Neben dich tells us where you are moving to sit.

  • Du setzt dich auf die Matte.

    You are sitting down on the mat.

    Use setzt dich with du. Auf die Matte gives the destination.

  • Oma freut sich, dich zu sehen.

    Grandma is happy to see you.

    Sich refers back to Oma. Here, dich means 'you': the person Grandma sees.

  • Wir freuen uns auf unsere Kuschelzeit.

    We are looking forward to our cuddle.

    Sich freuen auf means to look forward to. Unsere Kuschelzeit means 'our cuddle time'.

Matching reflexive pronouns

In these expressions, the reflexive pronoun refers back to the subject. Use these accusative forms.

Separable verbs and sitting down

In simple statements, umziehen and hinsetzen send their prefixes to the end. When you say where someone sits down, you can use sich setzen without hin. Sitzen describes already being seated and is not reflexive.

Being happy and looking forward

Use sich freuen with a zu-phrase to say you are happy to do something. Use sich freuen auf with an accusative object for something you look forward to. Freuen is not separable.

With wir, use uns. The prefix hin goes at the end.

Du freust dich auf die Kuschelzeit.

You are looking forward to cuddle time.

With du, use freust dich.

I am happy to see you.

Mich refers back to ich; dich is the person being seen.
