  • Use sich freuen auf to talk about something you are looking forward to.

German phrases for poolside happy moments

I am getting changed for swimming.

Umziehen is separable: um moves to the end. Use mich with ich.

  • Ziehst du dich jetzt um?

    Are you getting changed now?

In a yes/no question, the conjugated verb comes first. Use dich with du.

  • Dein Bruder zieht sich in der Umkleide um.

Your brother is getting changed in the changing room.

Your brother takes the same verb form and reflexive pronoun as er: zieht sich โ€ฆ um.

We are getting changed after swimming.

Use uns with wir. Nach dem Schwimmen means 'after swimming'.

  • Ich setze mich auf die Bank.

I am sitting down on the bench.

Sich setzen describes moving into a seated position. Auf die Bank tells us where you are sitting down.

  • Setz dich bitte neben mich.

Key words

sich umziehen

to get changed

Use this for changing clothes: Ich ziehe mich um.

sich hinsetzen

to sit down

Hinsetzen is separable: Ich setze mich hin. When naming the seat, you can say Ich setze mich auf die Bank.

sich freuen auf

to look forward to

Use this for something pleasant that is still to come.

die Umkleide

the changing room

A common short form of die Umkleidekabine.

die Bank

the bench

Here, Bank means a bench to sit on, not a financial bank.

der Schwimmclub

the swimming club

Schwimmverein is another common word for an organized swimming club.

die Schwimmstunde

the swimming lesson

The plural is die Schwimmstunden.

Reflexive pronouns: mich, dich, sich and uns

These verbs use a pronoun that refers back to the subject. English often does not translate it as 'myself' or 'yourself'.

UseFormExample
Iich + michIch ziehe mich um.
You: one childdu + dichDu setzt dich hin.
He or sheer/sie + sichDeine Schwester freut sich.
Wewir + unsWir freuen uns.

Separable verbs and gentle instructions

In simple statements and questions, umziehen and hinsetzen split: the prefix goes at the end. For an instruction to one child, leave out du but keep dich. German uses the present tense for both 'I get changed' and 'I am getting changed'.

UseFormExample
Statementsubject + verb + reflexive pronoun + โ€ฆ + prefixIch ziehe mich zum Schwimmen um.

Useful prepositions

Learn these short patterns as chunks. Auf takes the accusative after sich freuen. Sitting down onto a seat also uses the accusative, while being in the changing room uses the dative.
