  • Use yesterday or another place as the second part of a comparison.

German phrases for cosier baby choices

This blanket is softer than that blanket.

Weich becomes weicher. Die Decke da means “that blanket there” and sounds natural when pointing.

  • Deine Milch ist wärmer als mein Wasser.

Your milk is warmer than my water.

Warm becomes wärmer: add -er and change a to ä.

  • Diese Flasche ist größer als die Flasche da.

This bottle is bigger than that bottle.

Groß becomes größer: o changes to ö, and ß stays.

  • Dein Teddy ist kleiner als dein Kissen.

Your teddy is smaller than your cushion.

Klein becomes kleiner without an umlaut.

  • Du bist älter als dein Cousin, der noch ein Baby ist.

You are older than your baby cousin.

Alt becomes älter. The final clause means “who is still a baby.” For a girl, use deine Cousine, die noch ein Baby ist.

  • Dieses Lätzchen ist länger als das Lätzchen da.

This bib is longer than that bib.

Lang becomes länger. Lätzchen is neuter, so use dieses and das.

  • Dein Badewasser ist kälter als gestern.

Your bath is colder than yesterday.

Kalt becomes kälter. Badewasser makes clear that you mean the temperature of the bath water.

  • Du schläfst hier besser als im Kinderwagen.

You sleep better here than in the pram.

Gut has the irregular comparative besser. Im Kinderwagen means “in the pram.”

Comparing with -er and als

Most German adjectives form the comparative by adding -er. Use als for “than” when comparing unequal things. After ist, the comparative needs no additional adjective ending.

UseFormExample
Basic patternsubject + ist + comparative + als + comparisonDiese Decke ist weicher als die Decke da.
Soft → softerweich → weicherDie Decke ist weicher als das Kissen.

Common comparative forms with an umlaut

Some common short adjectives add an umlaut as well as -er. Learn these forms individually: not every adjective with a, o or u changes its vowel.

UseFormExample
