Compare Hobby Choices in German

Use simple German comparisons to help your child compare hobbies, equipment and places. Comparative adjectives with als mean “bigger than,” “cheaper than” and similar expressions.

German phrases for compare hobby choices

  • Dieses Fahrrad ist größer als dein altes Fahrrad.

    This bike is bigger than your old bike.

    Groß becomes größer. Dein altes Fahrrad means “your old bike.”

  • Der Kunstclub ist günstiger als der Musikclub.

    The art club is cheaper than the music club.

    Günstiger means “cheaper” or “more affordable” when comparing prices.

  • Dein neuer Schläger ist leichter als meiner.

    Your new racket is lighter than mine.

    Meiner replaces mein Schläger so you do not need to repeat the noun.

  • Schwimmen ist für mich besser als Laufen.

    Swimming is better than running for me.

    Besser is the irregular comparative of gut. Für mich means “for me.”

  • Dein Freund ist älter als du.

    Your friend is older than you.

    Use deine Freundin for a female friend. After als, du is correct here.

  • Dieses Spiel ist interessanter als das Spiel da.

    This game is more interesting than that game.

    Das Spiel da is a natural spoken way to say “that game.”

  • Die Sporthalle ist wärmer als der Spielplatz.

    The sports hall is warmer than the playground.

    Warm becomes wärmer, with an umlaut.

  • Dieses Puzzle ist schwerer als das letzte.

    This puzzle is harder than the last one.

    Schwerer means “harder” here, not “heavier.” Das letzte stands for das letzte Puzzle.

The sport tells you which meaning is intended. A tennis racket is der Tennisschläger.

Activity names formed from verbs are capitalized when used as nouns.

die Sporthalle / der Spielplatz

A Sporthalle is an indoor sports space; a Spielplatz is a place for children to play.

For a riddle or brain teaser, use das Rätsel instead.

Comparing with -er and als

Usually, add -er to the adjective and use als for “than.” Even long adjectives such as interessant take -er; do not add mehr. After ist, the comparative needs no extra adjective ending.

Umlauts and an irregular form

Some common short adjectives gain an umlaut in the comparative. Learn these forms individually. Gut has the irregular comparative besser.

Pronouns in comparisons

Als does not determine the case by itself. In these comparisons with ist, the compared person or thing is in the nominative case. A possessive pronoun can replace a repeated noun.
