Choosing between two in German

Compare familiar things before choosing: say which is softer, taller, lighter or better. Use comparative adjectives and als to express “than.”

What you'll learn

  • Form common comparative adjectives with -er.
  • Use als to compare two things.
  • Recognize umlaut forms such as länger and höher, and the irregular form besser.
  • Use a comparative without als when the other choice is understood.
