Which Is Yours? in German
Use standalone possessive pronouns to sort out belongings after a visit. In German, the ending matches the gender and number of the item, not the person who owns it.
What you'll learn
- Say which belongings are mine, yours, his, hers, ours or theirs.
- Ask who an item belongs to using a simple question with sein.
- Choose the correct nominative possessive pronoun for masculine, feminine, neuter and plural nouns.

Possessive pronouns stand alone
Before a noun, use a possessive determiner: mein Stift (my pen). A standalone possessive pronoun replaces the noun: meiner (mine). In these sentences with sein, the pronoun is nominative.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Masculine | mein Stift → meiner | Dieser Stift ist meiner. |
| Feminine | meine Jacke → meine | Diese Jacke ist meine. |
| Neuter | mein Notizbuch → meins | Dieses Notizbuch ist meins. |
| Plural | meine Kopfhörer → meine | Diese Kopfhörer sind meine. |
Choose the owner, then match the item
Choose the possessive stem for the owner, then the ending for the item. Each row lists masculine, feminine, neuter and plural forms, in that order. Meines, deines and seines are also correct neuter forms; meins, deins and seins are common in conversation.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Mine | meiner · meine · meins · meine | Der Stift ist meiner. |
| Yours: one person, informal | deiner · deine · deins · deine | Die Jacke ist deine. |
| His | seiner · seine · seins · seine | Der Rucksack ist seiner. |
| Hers | ihrer · ihre · ihres · ihre | Das Handy ist ihres. |
| Ours | unserer · unsere · unseres · unsere | Der Fußball ist unserer. |
| Yours: several people, informal | eurer · eure · eures · eure | Das Notizbuch ist eures. |
| Theirs | ihrer · ihre · ihres · ihre | Die Tasche ist ihre. |
Statements and yes/no questions
Use ist for one item and sind for plural items. In a statement, the verb comes second. In a yes/no question, put the verb first.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Singular statement | Item + ist + possessive pronoun | Der Rucksack ist seiner. |
| Singular question | Ist + item + possessive pronoun? | Ist der Rucksack seiner? |
| Plural question | Sind + items + possessive pronoun? | Sind diese Kopfhörer deine? |
