Thoughts About Tomorrow in German

Use gentle phrases to share thoughts, knowledge and hopes about your child's world. In German, dass means “that” and introduces a clause with the conjugated verb at the end.

What you'll learn

  • Share thoughts with denken, facts with wissen, and hopes with hoffen.
  • Report what someone says or said with sagen.
  • Put the conjugated verb at the end of a dass clause.
  • Use a comma before dass.

German phrases for thoughts about tomorrow

  • Ich denke, dass deine Idee gut ist.

I think that your idea is good.

Ist moves to the end of the dass clause.

  • Denkst du, dass dieses Spiel fair ist?

Do you think that this game is fair?

Start the question with Denkst du. The dass clause still ends with ist.

  • Ich weiß, dass du etwas Ruhe brauchst.

I know that you need some quiet time.

Etwas Ruhe means “some peace and quiet.” Brauchst comes last.

  • Wir wissen, dass dein Projekt wichtig ist.

We know that your project is important.

Use wir wissen for “we know,” but ich weiß for “I know.”

  • Ich hoffe, dass dein Freund kommen kann.

I hope that your friend can come.

The modal verb kann comes last, after kommen. For a female friend, use deine Freundin.

  • Wir hoffen, dass dir der neue Club gefällt.

We hope that you enjoy the new club.

Dir gefällt means “you like” or “you enjoy.” The club is the grammatical subject.

  • Dein Lehrer sagt, dass ihr gut zusammenarbeitet.

Your teacher says that you work well together.

Ihr means “you” when speaking about several people. For a female teacher, use Deine Lehrerin sagt.

  • Du hast gesagt, dass die Übernachtungsparty um sechs anfängt.

You said that the sleepover starts at six.

Du hast gesagt is a common spoken past form. Anfängt stays together at the end of the dass clause.

Introducing a dass clause

Use dass after denken, wissen, hoffen and sagen to introduce what someone thinks, knows, hopes or says. Put a comma before dass and the conjugated verb at the end. Unlike English “that,” dass cannot simply be dropped while keeping this word order.

UseFormExample
ThinkIch denke, dass …Ich denke, dass deine Idee gut ist.
KnowIch weiß, dass … / Wir wissen, dass …Wir wissen, dass dein Projekt wichtig ist.
HopeIch hoffe, dass … / Wir hoffen, dass …Ich hoffe, dass du Spaß hast.
SayDu sagst, dass … / Du hast gesagt, dass …Du hast gesagt, dass das Spiel fair ist.

What goes at the end?

The conjugated verb is the form that matches the subject, such as ist, brauchst or kann. With a modal verb, put the infinitive just before it. Separable verbs stay joined in a dass clause.

UseFormExample
One verbdass + subject + other words + conjugated verbdass du etwas Ruhe brauchst
Modal verbdass + subject + other words + infinitive + modal verbdass dein Freund kommen kann
Separable verbdass + subject + other words + joined verbdass die Übernachtungsparty um sechs anfängt
