Safe Little Choices in German
Use gentle, clear German to keep your baby safe and offer reassurance. Nicht dürfen sets a limit: “must not.” Nicht müssen removes pressure: “do not have to.”
What you'll learn
- Set safety limits with du darfst nicht.
- Reassure your child with du musst nicht.
- Place the main verb at the end of a sentence with a modal verb.
- Use noch nicht to mean “not yet.”
German phrases for safe little choices
Du darfst die heiße Tasse nicht anfassen.
You must not touch the hot cup.
Du darfst nicht expresses a clear safety rule.
Du darfst diesen Stein nicht in den Mund stecken.
You must not put that stone in your mouth.
German commonly uses den Mund rather than “your mouth” when the person is clear.
Du darfst die Katze nicht am Schwanz ziehen.
You must not pull the cat's tail.
Die Katze am Schwanz ziehen is the natural German expression for pulling the cat's tail.
Du darfst nicht auf diesen Stuhl klettern.
You must not climb onto this chair.
Auf diesen Stuhl describes movement onto the chair.
Du musst deine Milch nicht austrinken.
You do not have to finish your milk.
Austrinken means to finish a drink. Du musst nicht makes clear that finishing is optional.
Du musst nicht noch einen Löffel essen.
You do not have to eat another spoonful.
In a feeding context, einen Löffel essen means to eat a spoonful, not the spoon itself.
Du musst noch nicht schlafen.
You do not have to sleep yet.
Noch nicht means “not yet”: sleeping can wait.
Du musst nicht auf Omas Schoß sitzen.
You do not have to sit on Granny's lap.
Oma is an affectionate word for grandmother. This sentence gives your child a choice.

A prohibition or a choice?
Use nicht dürfen for something that is not allowed. Use nicht müssen for something that is not necessary. English “must not” is not translated as nicht müssen.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Not allowed | du darfst nicht + infinitive | Du darfst die heiße Tasse nicht anfassen. — You must not touch the hot cup. |
| Not necessary | du musst nicht + infinitive | Du musst deine Milch nicht austrinken. — You do not have to finish your milk. |
Modal verbs and word order
With du, dürfen becomes darfst and müssen becomes musst. The modal verb comes second in a statement, and the main verb goes at the end in its infinitive form. Nicht does not always come directly after the modal verb.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Dürfen with du | du + darfst + other words + infinitive | Du darfst nicht auf diesen Stuhl klettern. |
| Müssen with du | du + musst + other words + infinitive | Du musst deine Milch nicht austrinken. |
Not yet and not another
The order of noch and nicht changes the meaning. Noch nicht means “not yet.” Nicht noch einen means “not another one.”
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Sleeping can wait | noch nicht | Du musst noch nicht schlafen. — You do not have to sleep yet. |
| No extra spoonful needed | nicht noch einen Löffel | Du musst nicht noch einen Löffel essen. — You do not have to eat another spoonful. |
