Bis marks an endpoint
Bis means “until.” It introduces a subordinate clause that tells you when the main action or situation ends. Put a comma before bis and the conjugated verb at the end of its clause.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Basic pattern | Main clause, bis + subject + other words + conjugated verb. | Ich bleibe hier, bis du einschläfst. |
| With an adjective | bis + subject + adjective phrase + ist | Wir warten, bis deine Milch kühl genug ist. |
| With an expression | bis + es + dir + besser + geht | Ich halte dich im Arm, bis es dir besser geht. |
Separable verbs stay together after bis
Verbs such as aufhören and zurückkommen have separable prefixes. In a bis clause, the prefix stays attached to the conjugated verb at the end.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| aufhören — to stop | Der Regen hört auf. → bis der Regen aufhört | Wir bleiben drinnen, bis der Regen aufhört. |
| zurückkommen — to come back | Papa kommt zurück. → bis Papa zurückkommt | Ich bleibe neben dir sitzen, bis Papa zurückkommt. |
| aufwachen — to wake up | Du wachst auf. → bis du aufwachst | Dein Teddy bleibt hier, bis du aufwachst. |
Present tense for reassuring promises
German often uses the present tense where English uses “will,” especially when the future meaning is clear. You do not need werden in these comforting phrases.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| I will stay | ich bleibe | Ich bleibe hier, bis du einschläfst. |
| I will sing | ich singe | Ich singe, bis du deine Augen schließt. |
