Checking the weather is a great morning ritual. In Spanish, we often use the verb 'hacer' (to make/do) instead of 'to be' when describing weather conditions like sun, wind, or heat.

Spanish phrases for school run weather

  • Hace sol hoy.

    It is sunny today.

    Literally: 'It makes sun today'.

  • Hace frío esta mañana.

    It is cold this morning.

    Use 'hace' with 'frío' (coldness).

  • Hace viento afuera.

    It is windy outside.

    'Afuera' means outside.

  • Está nublado hoy.

    It is cloudy today.

    We use 'está' (it is) because being cloudy is a temporary state.

  • Hace calor en el parque.

    It is warm in the park.

    'Calor' literally means heat.

  • Hace mucho calor esta tarde.

    It is hot this afternoon.

    Adding 'mucho' (much) changes 'warm' to 'hot'.

  • Está lloviendo; lleva tu abrigo.

    It is raining; take your coat.

    'Lloviendo' is the gerund form of 'llover' (to rain).

  • Está nevando; ponte las botas.

    It is snowing; put on your boots.

    'Ponte' is the command 'put on' for yourself.
