No necessity: nicht or kein + brauchen + zu-infinitive
This use of brauchen means 'need to'. With nicht or kein, it says that an action is unnecessary, not forbidden. Use nicht to negate the action or a particular requirement; use a form of kein before a noun.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Negating an action | subject + brauchen + nicht + … + zu-infinitive | Du brauchst dich nicht zu rechtfertigen. |
| Negating a noun | subject + brauchen + kein- + noun + … + zu-infinitive | Du brauchst keine neue Ausrüstung zu kaufen. |
| Removing an every-time requirement | brauchen + nicht bei jedem Termin + zu-infinitive | Du brauchst nicht bei jedem Termin dein Talent zu beweisen. |
Limited necessity: nur + brauchen + zu-infinitive
Nur means 'only': the stated action or item is all that is required. Unlike nicht brauchen, this still expresses a requirement, but keeps it limited. Place nur before the action, item or restriction you want to highlight.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Only one necessary step | subject + brauchen + nur + … + zu-infinitive | Ich brauche nur Bescheid zu sagen. |
| Only certain items | subject + brauchen + nur + specified items + zu-infinitive | Du brauchst nur deine Materialien mitzubringen. |
Forming the infinitive after brauchen
Conjugate brauchen for the subject: ich brauche, du brauchst, wir brauchen. Keep the action verb in the zu-infinitive. With separable verbs, put zu between the prefix and the verb stem and write the result as one word. You may hear brauchen without zu in conversation; use zu in this standard pattern.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary infinitive | kaufen → zu kaufen | Wir brauchen nichts zu kaufen. |
| Separable: teilnehmen | teil + zu + nehmen → teilzunehmen | Du brauchst nicht teilzunehmen. |
| Separable: mithalten | mit + zu + halten → mitzuhalten | Du brauchst nicht mit allen mitzuhalten. |
| Separable: mitbringen | mit + zu + bringen → mitzubringen | Du brauchst nur deine Materialien mitzubringen. |
