When a rule deserves a second look in German
Use selbst wenn (“even if”) to welcome respectful disagreement while keeping care, fairness and safety consistent. It shows that the main statement still holds, even under a challenging or extreme condition.
What you'll learn
- Use selbst wenn to express that a condition does not change the main outcome.
- Place the finite verb at the end of a selbst wenn clause.
- Place the main-clause finite verb immediately after a fronted selbst wenn clause.
- Discuss family rules without making respect or care conditional.

die Meinung
opinion
Plural: die Meinungen. Unterschiedlicher Meinung sein means to disagree or have different opinions.
Selbst wenn: the outcome still holds
Selbst wenn means “even if.” It introduces a possible condition that might be expected to change the outcome, but does not. The condition need not actually be true. This is useful for making clear that respect, care or a safety requirement remains in place regardless.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| An extreme condition changes nothing | selbst wenn + condition, unchanged outcome | Selbst wenn alle anderen das dürfen, müssen wir über die Risiken sprechen. |
| Respect remains unconditional | unchanged outcome + selbst wenn + condition | Du kannst eine Regel hinterfragen, selbst wenn sie weiterhin gilt. |
Verb placement inside the condition
The finite verb goes at the end of the selbst wenn clause. If there is a participle and an auxiliary, the finite auxiliary comes last. Separate the condition from the main clause with a comma.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| One finite verb | selbst wenn + subject + … + finite verb | …, selbst wenn du dir Sorgen um mich machst. |
| Participle and auxiliary | selbst wenn + subject + … + participle + finite auxiliary | …, selbst wenn wir schon eine Entscheidung getroffen haben. |
Fronted condition: main-clause inversion
When the selbst wenn clause comes first, the whole clause occupies the first position. The main-clause finite verb therefore comes immediately after the comma, before its subject. When the condition follows the main clause, the main clause keeps its usual word order.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Condition first | Selbst wenn … + finite verb, main-clause finite verb + subject + … | Selbst wenn ich genervt bin, verdienst du eine vernünftige Erklärung. |
| Condition last | subject + finite verb + …, selbst wenn … + finite verb | Du verdienst eine vernünftige Erklärung, selbst wenn ich genervt bin. |
| Optional reinforcement | Selbst wenn …, finite verb + subject + trotzdem + … | Selbst wenn es nur einmal passiert, ist es trotzdem wichtig, dass du es uns sagst. |
