B2 first milestone in German

Celebrate your first B2 milestone: you can explain decisions, reflect on what might have happened and negotiate thoughtfully. This unit reviews familiar grammar only, using everyday situations involving family, friends and shared activities.

What you'll learn

  • Distinguish completed passive processes from resulting states.
  • Identify whose person or possession is meant using genitive relative clauses.
  • Review regular weak masculine noun endings.
  • Reflect on unreal past choices and question apparent assumptions.
  • Express limited necessity, balanced objections and outcomes that hold even under difficult conditions.

German phrases for b2 first milestone

  • Ist die geänderte Frist allen erklärt worden?

Has the revised deadline been explained to everyone?

Ist … erklärt worden reviews the Perfekt process passive: the question concerns whether the explanation has taken place.

  • Ist er der Nachbar, dessen Sohn den Programmierclub leitet?

Is he the neighbour whose son runs the coding club?

Dessen refers to der Nachbar. Nachbar has no extra ending here because it is nominative singular.

  • Wenn ich die Folgen verstanden hätte, hätte ich mich anders entschieden.

If I'd understood the consequences, I'd have chosen differently.

Both clauses use past counterfactual Konjunktiv II: the understanding and the different choice did not happen.

  • Du brauchst nicht jede Einladung anzunehmen, um befreundet zu bleiben.

You don't need to accept every invitation to stay friends.

Nicht … brauchen with a zu-infinitive expresses lack of necessity. With annehmen, zu goes inside the verb: anzunehmen.

  • Die Regelung ist zwar praktisch, aber sie lässt keine Nachmittage frei.

The arrangement is admittedly convenient, but it leaves no free afternoons.

Zwar acknowledges the advantage; aber introduces the drawback.

  • Das Mikrofon ist stummgeschaltet, deshalb kann niemand unser Gespräch hören.

The microphone is muted, so nobody can hear our discussion.

Ist stummgeschaltet describes the microphone's current state: Zustandspassiv.

  • Es klingt, als ob deine Meinung die einzige wäre, die zählt.

It sounds as though your opinion were the only one that mattered.

Als ob … wäre marks distance from the apparent claim rather than accepting it as fact.

  • Selbst wenn wir die Entscheidung nicht rückgängig machen können, können wir daraus lernen.

Even if we can't reverse the decision, we can learn from it.

Selbst wenn presents a condition that does not change the main point: learning is still possible.

Review: completed passive process or resulting state?

Use ist/sind + past participle + worden to ask or report whether a passive action has happened. Use sein + past participle to describe a resulting state. In the Perfekt process passive, use worden, not geworden.

UseFormExample
Perfekt process passiveist/sind + Partizip II + wordenDie Frist ist allen erklärt worden.
Zustandspassivsein + Partizip IIDas Mikrofon ist stummgeschaltet.

Review: whose? Dessen and deren

Choose dessen for a masculine or neuter antecedent and deren for a feminine or plural antecedent. The relative pronoun stands directly before the possessed noun; its choice depends on the owner, not the possession.

UseFormExample
Masculine antecedentder Nachbar, dessen Sohn …Ist er der Nachbar, dessen Sohn den Programmierclub leitet?
Feminine antecedentdie Nachbarin, deren Sohn …Ist sie die Nachbarin, deren Sohn den Programmierclub leitet?

Review: unreal past conditions and consequences

Use hätte or wäre + past participle for an imagined alternative to the past. In a wenn-clause, the auxiliary comes last. A following main clause begins with its finite verb.

UseFormExample
Unreal past conditionwenn + … + Partizip II + hätte/wäreWenn ich die Folgen verstanden hätte, hätte ich mich anders entschieden.
Alternative with wärewäre + Partizip IIWenn wir früher gekommen wären, hätten wir den Nachbarn getroffen.

Review: regular masculine n-declension

Weak masculine nouns such as Nachbar, Junge and Student take -(e)n in the accusative, dative and genitive singular, but not in the nominative singular.

UseFormExample
Nominative singularder NachbarEr ist der Nachbar.
Accusative singularden NachbarnWir fragen den Nachbarn.
Dative singulardem NachbarnWir erklären dem Nachbarn die Regelung.
Genitive singulardes NachbarnDie Meinung des Nachbarn zählt auch.

Review: brauchen with zu

Use brauchen with nicht, kein or nur and a zu-infinitive to express no or limited necessity. With separable verbs, place zu between the prefix and the verb stem.

UseFormExample
No necessitynicht brauchen + zu-infinitiveDu brauchst nicht jede Einladung anzunehmen.
Limited necessitynur brauchen + zu-infinitiveDu brauchst nur zuzuhören.

Review: acknowledging and contrasting

Zwar … aber concedes a valid point before introducing a contrasting one. Both parts keep main-clause word order.

UseFormExample
Advantage followed by drawback… zwar …, aber …Die Regelung ist zwar praktisch, aber sie lässt keine Nachmittage frei.

Review: apparent reality with als ob

Als ob + Konjunktiv II presents an impression while marking distance from it. The finite verb goes at the end of the als ob-clause.

UseFormExample
Questioning an impressionals ob + … + wäre/hätteEs klingt, als ob nur deine Meinung wichtig wäre.

Review: even under that condition

Selbst wenn means even if: the main statement remains valid despite the condition. Put the finite verb last in the selbst wenn-clause. When that clause comes first, the main clause starts with its finite verb.

UseFormExample
Fronted concessive conditionSelbst wenn + … + verb, verb + subject + …Selbst wenn wir die Entscheidung nicht rückgängig machen können, können wir daraus lernen.
