Missing a friend who has moved away in German

Use independent wishes with wenn ... doch or wenn ... nur to express missing a friend and wishing that distance or everyday circumstances were different. These wishes make room for feelings without demanding a solution.

What you'll learn

  • Express wishes about distance, time together and staying in touch.
  • Use wenn ... doch/nur with the finite verb at the end.
  • Choose forms such as wäre, hätte, könnte and wüsste for unreal present wishes.
  • Recognise these wishes as complete utterances, not unfinished conditions or past counterfactuals.

If only my best friend still lived nearby.

Freundin refers to a female friend, matching 'her' later in the unit. Doch expresses longing; noch means 'still'.

I wish we had more time to talk properly.

Hätten expresses a wish for more time now, not something that happened in the past.

If only the journey weren't so long.

Nur adds the feeling of 'if only'; nicht so lang names what you wish were different.

I wish I could pop round after school.

Kurz vorbeikommen is a natural way to say 'pop round'. Könnte expresses a wished-for possibility.

If only our weekends were free at the same time.

I wish staying in touch were a bit easier.

Wäre marks the unreal wish. The phrase explaining what would be easier follows the comma.

If only I knew when we could meet again.

Wüsste expresses the wish to know now; könnten refers to a possible next meeting.

I wish I could be there for her birthday.

Dabei sein means being there and taking part in the occasion.

A complete wish with wenn ... doch/nur

Use wenn + subject + doch or nur + the rest of the wish, with the finite Konjunktiv II verb at the end of the wenn clause. Although the wording begins with 'if', it stands alone: no result clause is needed. An exclamation mark is common, but a full stop can give a quieter tone.

UseFormExample
DochWenn + subject + doch + ...

These synthetic forms express circumstances you wish were different. Wäre, hätte, könnte and wüsste are common, natural choices. With a modal such as könnte, put the infinitive directly before it. Regular forms such as wohnte look like the simple past, but the wish construction makes their unreal meaning clear.

UseFormExample

Present wishes, not past counterfactuals

These wishes concern current circumstances or possibilities viewed from now, including an upcoming birthday or meeting. Hätte can simply mean 'had' in a present wish, and wäre can mean 'were'; neither automatically refers to the past. This unit does not use hätte/wäre + a past participle to imagine a different past.

UseFormExample
Current lack of timehätte/hätten + nounWenn wir doch mehr Zeit hätten!
Current obstacle to a future eventinfinitive + könnteWenn ich doch an ihrem Geburtstag dabei sein könnte!
