Before buying something inside a game in German

Learn to check in-game costs, purchase conditions and account safeguards together. Use sein + zu-infinitive to describe what must be done or what can be done. This construction is common in instructions and purchase information, though more formal than everyday conversation.

What you'll learn

  • Explain which checks are necessary before confirming a purchase.
  • Ask whether costs, purchase options and account information can be identified.
  • Distinguish requirements, prohibitions and impossibility from context.

Form: sein + zu-infinitive

The subject is the thing affected by the action. Use a matching form of sein and a zu-infinitive to express what must or can be done to it. With separable verbs such as weitergeben, zu goes between the prefix and the verb.

UseFormExample
Singular subjectsubject + ist + zu-infinitiveDer Gesamtpreis ist zu prüfen.
Plural subjectsubject + sind + zu-infinitiveDie Bedingungen sind zu lesen.

Necessity or possibility?

Context determines the meaning. Rules and required steps usually express 'must be done'. Questions about visibility, availability or location usually express 'can be done'. A question is not automatically about possibility.

UseFormExample
Necessary actionsein + zu-infinitive = must be doneDer Kauf ist von einem Erwachsenen zu genehmigen.
Possible actionsein + zu-infinitive = can be doneSind die Zusatzkosten sofort zu erkennen?
Location of available informationWo + ist/sind + subject + zu-infinitive?Wo ist die Kaufhistorie zu finden?

Negative forms: impossible or forbidden

Nicht with sein + zu-infinitive can express impossibility or prohibition. A statement about an unavailable cancellation means 'cannot'; a password safety rule means 'must not'. Nicht mehr means 'no longer'. These negative forms do not normally mean 'does not have to'.
