Holding two views at once in German
Use einerseits ... andererseits to hold two perspectives side by side: “on the one hand ... on the other hand.” This helps you discuss competing wishes, needs and concerns without dismissing either.
What you'll learn
- Present two competing perspectives using einerseits ... andererseits.
- Keep the finite verb in second position when either connector begins a main clause.
- Describe mixed feelings and weigh practical choices respectfully.
German phrases for holding two views at once
Einerseits mag ich Überraschungen; andererseits bereite ich mich gern vor.
On the one hand, I like surprises; on the other, I like to prepare.
Each connector begins a main clause: einerseits mag ich and andererseits bereite ich.
Einerseits ist es günstiger; andererseits ist es weniger zuverlässig.
It's cheaper on the one hand, but less reliable on the other.
The pair balances lower cost against lower reliability.
Einerseits möchte ich eine ehrliche Antwort; andererseits habe ich auch Angst davor, sie zu hören.
I want an honest answer, but I also worry about hearing it.
The connectors show that both feelings exist at the same time.
Einerseits möchte ich die Führung übernehmen; andererseits wünsche ich mir weniger Verantwortung.
Part of me wants to lead; another part wants less responsibility.
Einerseits ... andererseits naturally expresses an internal conflict without literally saying “part of me.”
Einerseits brauchen wir eine schnelle Entscheidung; andererseits brauchen wir auch die Meinung aller.
We need a quick decision, but we also need everyone's opinion.
Repeating brauchen wir gives both needs equal weight.
Einerseits ist die Idee spannend; andererseits bringt sie ziemlich viel Unsicherheit mit sich.
The idea is exciting, but it involves quite a lot of uncertainty.
The finite verbs ist and bringt directly follow the connectors.
Einerseits weiß ich das Angebot zu schätzen; andererseits möchte ich es auch gern allein schaffen.
I appreciate the offer, but I'd also like to manage alone.
The pair acknowledges the offer while also expressing a wish for independence.
Einerseits ist mehr Auswahl hilfreich; andererseits kann sie die Entscheidung erschweren.
More choice is useful, but it can make deciding harder.
In the second clause, the finite verb kann follows andererseits.

Presenting two competing perspectives
Einerseits introduces one side; andererseits introduces another. Both remain valid considerations. The pair does not itself say which side matters more or make a final decision.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| First perspective | Einerseits + finite verb + subject + ... | Einerseits brauchen wir eine schnelle Entscheidung. |
| Competing perspective | Andererseits + finite verb + subject + ... | Andererseits brauchen wir auch die Meinung aller. |
Verb-second order and connector placement
When either connector comes first, it occupies the first position, so the finite verb comes immediately after it and the subject follows. Do not insert a comma after the connector. The connectors can also appear inside the clause; then the subject can stay first. A semicolon or a full stop can separate the two main clauses.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Connectors first | Einerseits + verb + subject; andererseits + verb + subject. | Einerseits ist es günstiger; andererseits ist es weniger zuverlässig. |
| Connectors inside the clauses | Subject + verb + einerseits ...; subject + verb + andererseits ... | Es ist einerseits günstiger; es ist andererseits weniger zuverlässig. |
| Finite verb directly after the connector | Andererseits + finite verb + subject + ... | Andererseits kann sie die Entscheidung erschweren. |
