When a secret feels too heavy in German

Help your child recognise when keeping a friend's secret is too much to handle alone. Use zu …, als dass with Konjunktiv II to explain calmly why safety and care can make support from a trusted adult necessary. This construction is somewhat formal but useful for expressing clear, thoughtful limits.

What you'll learn

  • Explain that a situation is too serious, urgent or worrying for a particular response to be acceptable.
  • Use zu with an adjective or adverb and als dass with Konjunktiv II.
  • Name different subjects in the main clause and the als dass clause.
  • Reassure your child that asking a trusted adult for help can be an act of care.

German phrases for when a secret feels too heavy

  • Das ist zu ernst, als dass wir es ignorieren könnten.

This is too serious for us to ignore it.

Zu ernst rules out ignoring the situation as an acceptable response.

  • Die Sorge ist zu groß, als dass du sie allein tragen könntest.

The worry is too big for you to carry it alone.

Eine Sorge tragen uses the same image of carrying an emotional burden as English.

  • Die Situation ist zu kompliziert, als dass ich sie fair beurteilen könnte.

The situation is too complicated for me to judge it fairly.

The subjects differ: die Situation describes the difficulty; ich names the person whose judgment is limited.

  • Deine Sicherheit ist zu wichtig, als dass ich schweigen könnte.

Your safety is too important for me to stay silent.

Here, könnte expresses what the speaker can accept in good conscience, not a physical ability.

  • Das Risiko ist zu groß, als dass wir bis Montag warten könnten.

The risk is too great for us to wait until Monday.

This calmly sets a limit: waiting is not an acceptable option.

  • Seine Nachricht ist zu beunruhigend, als dass ich sie einfach löschen könnte.

His message is too worrying for me to simply delete it.

Einfach löschen means deleting it without taking further action.

  • Das Problem ist zu dringend, als dass alle es geheim halten könnten.

The problem is too urgent for everyone to keep it secret.

The urgency makes continued secrecy by everyone untenable.

  • Unsere Freundschaft bedeutet mir zu viel, als dass ich so tun könnte, als wäre nichts los.

Our friendship matters too much for me to pretend nothing is wrong.

Zu viel expresses excessive degree with bedeutet mir rather than with an adjective.

Expressing a degree that rules out a result

Use zu before an adjective or adverb to mean 'too'. The following als dass clause names the result or action that this degree rules out. In these phrases, Konjunktiv II presents that action as unavailable or unacceptable. Do not add nicht just to express the English idea 'cannot': the construction already conveys that limit.

UseFormExample
Too + adjectiveSubject + verb + zu + adjective, als dass + subject + … + Konjunktiv II.Das ist zu ernst, als dass wir es ignorieren könnten.
Too muchSubject + verb + … + zu viel, als dass + subject + … + Konjunktiv II.Unsere Freundschaft bedeutet mir zu viel, als dass ich schweigen könnte.

Different subjects and clause-final verbs

The als dass clause has its own explicit subject, which can differ from the main-clause subject. Put a comma before als dass. With könnte, könntest or könnten, place the action infinitive immediately before the finite verb at the end of that clause.

UseFormExample
Situation → persondie Situation → ich … beurteilen könnteDie Situation ist zu kompliziert, als dass ich sie fair beurteilen könnte.
Worry → childdie Sorge → du … tragen könntestDie Sorge ist zu groß, als dass du sie allein tragen könntest.
Risk → groupdas Risiko → wir … warten könntenDas Risiko ist zu groß, als dass wir bis Montag warten könnten.

Practical limits, not only literal impossibility

This pattern can express that an action would be irresponsible or emotionally unacceptable, even if it is physically possible. That makes it useful for explaining why protecting someone matters more than keeping a dangerous secret.

UseFormExample
A caring boundaryzu wichtig, als dass … schweigen könnteDeine Sicherheit ist zu wichtig, als dass ich schweigen könnte.
