Checking second-hand hobby equipment in German

Learn to ask what can still be adjusted, repaired, cleaned or replaced when checking second-hand hobby equipment. Use sich lassen plus an infinitive to describe what is possible without saying who does it.

What you'll learn

  • Ask practical questions about used equipment with lässt sich.
  • Use lässt sich for singular subjects and lassen sich for plural subjects.
  • Express possibility, ease and impossibility using an infinitive without zu.
  • Discuss safe repairs, storage and price before buying.

German phrases for checking second-hand hobby equipment

  • Lässt sich die Höhe ohne Spezialwerkzeug verstellen?

Can the height be adjusted without special tools?

Lässt sich … verstellen asks whether adjustment is possible.

  • Dieser Gurt lässt sich ganz leicht austauschen.

This strap can be replaced quite easily.

Ganz leicht describes how easily the replacement can be done.

  • Die Räder lassen sich ohne Schraubenschlüssel nicht abnehmen.

The wheels cannot be removed without a spanner.

Plural Räder takes lassen. Ohne Schraubenschlüssel nicht states the limit: a spanner is needed.

  • Lässt sich dieser Riss tatsächlich sicher reparieren?

Can that crack actually be repaired safely?

Sicher asks about a safe repair, not merely whether a repair is possible.

  • Das ganze Set lässt sich in diese Tasche packen.

The whole set can be packed into this bag.

Lässt sich … packen expresses whether packing the set into the bag is possible.

  • Diese Flecken lassen sich mit warmem Wasser entfernen.

These marks can be cleaned off with warm water.

Flecken refers here to surface marks or stains, rather than scratches.

  • Die Anleitung lässt sich von der Website des Herstellers herunterladen.

The instructions can be downloaded from the manufacturer's website.

Herunterladen stays together as an infinitive; do not add zu.

  • Vielleicht lässt sich der Preis noch verhandeln.

Perhaps the price can still be negotiated.

Vielleicht and noch make this a tentative suggestion that there may still be room to negotiate.

Expressing what can be done

Use a thing as the subject, followed by a form of lassen, sich and an infinitive. This means that something can be done to the thing; it does not mean the thing acts on itself. The person doing the action is left unnamed. Use the infinitive without zu.

UseFormExample
Singular subjectsubject + lässt sich + … + infinitiveDieser Gurt lässt sich austauschen.
Plural subjectsubject + lassen sich + … + infinitiveDiese Flecken lassen sich entfernen.
No zulässt sich reparieren, not lässt sich zu reparierenDas Rad lässt sich reparieren.

Questions and opening words

For a yes/no question, put lässt or lassen first. If a statement starts with vielleicht, the conjugated form of lassen comes next. The infinitive stays at the end.

UseFormExample
Singular questionLässt sich + subject + … + infinitive?Lässt sich die Höhe verstellen?
Plural questionLassen sich + subject + … + infinitive?Lassen sich die Räder abnehmen?
Tentative statementVielleicht lässt sich + subject + … + infinitive.Vielleicht lässt sich der Preis noch verhandeln.

Ease, safety and limits

Add words such as leicht or sicher to describe how something can be done. Nicht makes the possibility negative. With ohne plus a tool, you can specify what cannot be done without that tool. The construction expresses feasibility, not a guarantee that a repair is safe.

UseFormExample
Easy to dolässt sich leicht + infinitiveDer Gurt lässt sich leicht austauschen.
Checking safetyLässt sich + subject + sicher + infinitive?Lässt sich dieser Riss sicher reparieren?
Not possible under these conditionslassen sich ohne … nicht + infinitiveDie Räder lassen sich ohne Schraubenschlüssel nicht abnehmen.
