Review: processes and resulting states
Use werden-based passive forms for actions or procedures and sein plus a past participle for the resulting state. In the perfect process passive, use worden, not geworden.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Past process | wurde/wurden + past participle | Die Anleitung wurde gekürzt. |
| Perfect process | ist/sind + past participle + worden | Das Konto ist gesperrt worden. |
| Resulting state | sein + past participle | Das Konto ist gesperrt. |
Review: two kinds of relative clause
Dessen and deren identify possession and depend on the antecedent: dessen for masculine or neuter singular, deren for feminine singular or plural. Sentential was comments on an entire preceding clause. Both kinds place the finite verb at the end.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Possession | antecedent + dessen/deren + possessed noun | Das Kind, dessen Konto gesperrt wurde, braucht Hilfe. |
| Comment on a whole statement | statement, was ... finite verb | Die Anleitung wurde gekürzt, was mehrere Fragen offenließ. |
Review: unreal alternatives, wishes and appearances
Keep the time reference clear: hätte/wäre plus a past participle describes an unreal past, while a present wish uses forms such as hätte, wäre or könnte without a past participle. Als ob with Konjunktiv II distances you from an apparent reality.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Past counterfactual | wenn ... hätte/wäre + past participle; counterfactual result | Wenn ich den Namen überprüft hätte, hätte ich die richtige Person kontaktiert. |
| Present wish | Wenn ... doch/nur ... hätte/wäre/könnte! | Wenn die Erklärung doch klarer wäre! |
| Unreal comparison | als ob ... Konjunktiv II | Es klingt, als ob alles schon entschieden wäre. |
Review: noun endings
Weak masculine nouns add -(e)n outside the nominative singular. Mixed nouns such as Name and Gedanke use -n in the accusative and dative but -ns in the genitive. Herz has its own familiar pattern.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Regular weak noun | der Junge – den Jungen – dem Jungen – des Jungen | Wir hören dem Jungen zu. |
| Mixed masculine noun | der Name – den Namen – dem Namen – des Namens | Bitte überprüfe die Schreibweise des Namens. |
| Special neuter noun | das Herz – das Herz – dem Herzen – des Herzens | Das liegt mir am Herzen. |
Review: necessity and feasibility with zu
Brauchen with nicht, kein or nur limits necessity. Sein plus zu-infinitive describes what must or can be done; context determines the meaning.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| No necessity | nicht brauchen + zu-infinitive | Du brauchst nicht sofort zu entscheiden. |
| Separable infinitive | prefix + zu + verb | Du brauchst das Formular nicht auszufüllen. |
| Necessity | sein + zu-infinitive | Die Gebühren sind vor der Anmeldung zu prüfen. |
| Impossibility | nicht sein + zu-infinitive | Diese Erklärung ist nicht zu verstehen. |
Review: balancing viewpoints
Zwar ... aber acknowledges a point before qualifying it. Einerseits ... andererseits gives two competing perspectives. Keep main-clause verb-second order.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Concession and contrast | zwar ... aber | Es ist zwar praktisch, aber die Gebühren sind unklar. |
| Two perspectives | Einerseits + finite verb ... andererseits + finite verb | Einerseits ist es praktisch, andererseits sind die Gebühren unklar. |
Review: boundaries, consequences and conditions
These connectors introduce verb-final clauses. Selbst wenn preserves an outcome despite a condition; sofern sets a prerequisite. Zu ... als dass marks a prevented result, while ohne dass describes an absent accompanying event with its own explicit subject.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Even under this condition | selbst wenn ... finite verb | Selbst wenn die anderen ungeduldig sind, brauchst du nicht sofort zu entscheiden. |
| Excessive degree | zu + adjective, als dass ... Konjunktiv II | Das Anliegen ist zu wichtig, als dass wir es ignorieren könnten. |
| Absent accompanying event | ohne dass + subject ... finite verb | Wir entscheiden nichts, ohne dass du davon weißt. |
| Prerequisite | sofern ... finite verb | Wir machen weiter, sofern alle einverstanden sind. |
