Adding another important point in German
Use nicht nur …, sondern auch … to connect two relevant qualities, people, things or actions. Both points are true; the second adds something worth emphasising. This is useful for giving a fuller picture in everyday family conversations.
What you'll learn
- Connect two relevant points using nicht nur …, sondern auch ….
- Place the connectors directly before the elements they emphasise.
- Link parallel adjectives, noun phrases or actions.
- Use a comma before sondern and maintain normal main-clause word order.

Two true points, with added emphasis
Nicht nur …, sondern auch … means 'not only … but also …'. It does not deny the first point: it adds a second, often more striking point. Always put a comma before sondern.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Basic pattern | nicht nur A, sondern auch B | Die Abkürzung spart nicht nur Zeit, sondern auch Energie. |
| Two qualities | nicht nur + adjective phrase, sondern auch + adjective phrase | Ich bin nicht nur enttäuscht, sondern auch ziemlich verwirrt. |
Match the elements and place the emphasis precisely
Link elements with the same role: two qualities, two objects or two actions. Put nicht nur and auch directly before the relevant element or phrase. Shared material can stay outside the pair rather than being repeated.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Two noun phrases | shared verb + nicht nur + noun phrase, sondern auch + noun phrase | Wir brauchen nicht nur eine gute Idee, sondern auch einen realistischen Plan. |
| Two people | nicht nur + person A, sondern auch + person B | Die Erklärung hat nicht nur mir, sondern auch meinem Partner geholfen. |
| Two action phrases | shared subject and auxiliary + nicht nur + action A, sondern auch + action B | Sie hat nicht nur zugehört, sondern auch hilfreiche Ratschläge gegeben. |
| Pronoun before auch | …, sondern + unstressed pronoun + auch + remaining action phrase | Er hat nicht nur den Fehler entdeckt, sondern ihn auch klar erklärt. |
Linking full clauses
You can also connect full main clauses. Sondern does not send the verb to the end. In the second clause, auch goes with the point being added; it does not have to stand immediately after sondern.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Two full clauses | subject + finite verb + nicht nur …, sondern + subject + finite verb + auch … | Das Spiel macht nicht nur Spaß, sondern es fördert auch die Konzentration. |
