When the calendar gets too full in German
Reflect kindly on an overfull family calendar. Use hätte with modal infinitives to say what would have been wiser and what other options were available, while keeping the focus on shared solutions rather than blame.
What you'll learn
- Use hätte … sollen to express retrospective advice or regret.
- Use hätte … können to describe missed possibilities.
- Form statements, negative statements and questions with past modal counterfactuals.
- Acknowledge an unfair burden without criticising the person who carried it.
We should have checked the dates before signing up.
Hätten … prüfen sollen identifies a better course of action in hindsight.
Ich hätte einen Nachmittag komplett freihalten sollen.
I should have left one afternoon completely free.
Freihalten sollen means ‘should have kept free’ here.
You could have told me about the extra rehearsal.
Hättest … erzählen können describes a missed opportunity. Addressed directly to someone, it can also sound reproachful; tone matters.
Wir hätten nicht beide Einladungen annehmen sollen.
We should not have accepted both invitations.
Nicht beide means ‘not both’: accepting one might have been fine.
I could have asked for a different lesson time.
Hätte … fragen können presents an option that was available but not taken.
Should we have cancelled before the deadline?
For this yes/no question, hätten comes first; absagen sollen stays at the end.
You should not have had to organise everything alone.
This wording says the situation was unfair, not that the person did anything wrong. The target pattern is hätte … sein sollen.
We could have shared the driving with another family.
Hätten … teilen können points to a missed way of sharing the workload.

The core pattern: hätte + double infinitive
Use a form of hätte followed by the action infinitive and then the modal infinitive. The modal appears as sollen or können, not as a past participle. There is no zu between the two infinitives. In statements, the finite form of hätte is in second position and the infinitive pair normally closes the clause.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
Choosing sollen or können
Hätte … sollen says that a different action would have been wiser or more appropriate. Hätte … können says that another option was possible. In this reflective context, both usually suggest that the action did not happen. Using ich or wir can help keep the discussion focused on responsibility and shared learning.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| A better choice in hindsight | hätte … sollen = should have | Wir hätten die Termine prüfen sollen. |
| An available alternative | hätte … können = could have | Wir hätten eine andere Familie fragen können. |
Negation, questions and unfair burdens
Use nicht to reject the past choice; its position helps show what is rejected. In yes/no questions, put hätte before the subject. To express ‘should not have had to’ clearly, Es hätte nicht so sein sollen, dass … criticises the situation rather than the person. Hätte … nicht … müssen alone can instead mean ‘would not have needed to’.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Not both | hätten + nicht beide + … + infinitive + sollen | Wir hätten nicht beide Einladungen annehmen sollen. |
| Question | Hätte(n) + subject + … + infinitive + sollen?
