Understanding medical device exceptions in German

Practise stating a general rule while allowing a clear exception with es sei denn (unless). These phrases distinguish recreational phone use from health-related access and respect each person's privacy.

What you'll learn

  • Use es sei denn to introduce a specific exception to a rule or arrangement.
  • Keep the finite verb in second position in the clause after es sei denn.
  • Discuss medical access and support without asking anyone to explain their needs publicly.

German phrases for understanding medical device exceptions

  • Handys bleiben in den Taschen, es sei denn, jemand benötigt sein Handy aus medizinischen Gründen.

Phones stay in bags unless someone needs theirs for medical reasons.

The exception concerns medical need. In jemand benötigt sein Handy, benötigt is in second position.

  • Wir lassen die Einstellungen unverändert, es sei denn, die Pflegefachkraft empfiehlt eine Änderung.

We will leave the settings alone unless the nurse recommends a change.

Die Pflegefachkraft is the subject; empfiehlt follows it in second position.

  • Du musst nichts erklären, es sei denn, du möchtest unsere Hilfe.

You do not need to explain unless you want our help.

This leaves explanations optional unless help is wanted; it does not ask for a public explanation.

  • Ich gehe davon aus, dass die Warnmeldung privat ist, es sei denn, du sagst mir etwas anderes.

I will assume the alert is private unless you tell me otherwise.

Du sagst mir etwas anderes is a natural way to express 'you tell me otherwise'.

  • Wir sollten niemanden unterbrechen, es sei denn, jemand bittet um Hilfe.

We should not interrupt unless someone asks for assistance.

The exception is an explicit request for help, not merely hearing an alert.

  • Die bisherige Regelung gilt weiter, es sei denn, die Bedürfnisse der betreffenden Person ändern sich.

The same arrangement continues unless their needs change.

Der betreffenden Person means 'of the person concerned' and keeps singular 'their' gender-neutral.

  • Du kannst weiterspielen, es sei denn, die Warnmeldung bedeutet, dass du eine Pause brauchst.

You can keep playing unless the alert means you need a break.

The clause directly after es sei denn has verb-second order: die Warnmeldung bedeutet.

  • Ich werde nicht über deine Erkrankung sprechen, es sei denn, du gibst mir die Erlaubnis dazu.

I will not discuss your condition unless you give me permission.

The exception is permission from the person concerned.

Introducing an exception with es sei denn

Es sei denn means 'unless' or 'except if'. State the rule or default first, then give the specific circumstance that makes an exception. Treat es sei denn as a fixed expression.

UseFormExample
Default plus exceptionDefault statement, es sei denn, exception.Handys bleiben in den Taschen, es sei denn, jemand benötigt sein Handy aus medizinischen Gründen.
Exception to a negative statementNegative statement, es sei denn, exception.Wir sollten niemanden unterbrechen, es sei denn, jemand bittet um Hilfe.

Verb-second order after es sei denn

In this pattern, the clause after es sei denn uses main-clause word order: the finite verb comes second. Es sei denn sits outside that clause and does not count as its first position. Put a comma before es sei denn and another before the exception clause. Do not move the exception clause's finite verb to the end.

UseFormExample
Subject followed by finite verbes sei denn, subject + finite verb + restDu musst nichts erklären, es sei denn, du möchtest unsere Hilfe.
A longer subject still occupies one positiones sei denn, [complete subject] + finite verb + restDie bisherige Regelung gilt weiter, es sei denn, die Bedürfnisse der betreffenden Person ändern sich.
Word-order checkUse du möchtest unsere Hilfe, not du unsere Hilfe möchtest.Es sei denn, du möchtest unsere Hilfe.

More examples

Wir lassen dein Handy in Reichweite, es sei denn, du möchtest es lieber in deiner Tasche behalten.

We will leave your phone within reach unless you would rather keep it in your bag.

The person's preference provides the exception; möchtest follows du.

Wir fragen nicht nach dem Grund für die Warnmeldung, es sei denn, du bittest uns um Hilfe.

We will not ask about the reason for the alert unless you ask us for help.

The default protects privacy; the exception is a request for support.

Die vereinbarte Regelung bleibt bestehen, es sei denn, du brauchst eine andere Lösung.

The agreed arrangement remains in place unless you need a different solution.

A changed need can justify an exception without requiring a public explanation.
