Respect in the changing room in German

Use impersonal passive sentences to describe what happens in a changing room and set clear expectations about privacy and respect. The focus stays on behaviour rather than on who performs the action.

What you'll learn

  • Describe activities without naming the people involved.
  • Use singular wird in subjectless passive sentences, even when a prepositional phrase contains a plural noun.
  • Use placeholder es only in first position and omit it when another element comes first.
  • Express shared expectations about privacy and respectful behaviour.

German phrases for respect in the changing room

  • In der Umkleidekabine wird viel geflüstert.

There is a lot of whispering in the changing room.

Flüstern has no object here. The passive describes the activity without naming the people whispering.

  • Hier darf nicht über die Körper anderer gelacht werden.

People's bodies must not be laughed at here.

Über die Körper anderer remains a prepositional phrase; it does not become the subject.

  • Vor dem Betreten dieses Raums muss angeklopft werden.

Everyone must knock before entering this room.

The impersonal rule applies to everyone without explicitly naming them.

  • Es darf nicht auf jemanden gestarrt werden, der sich gerade umzieht.

People must not stare at anyone getting changed.

Starren auf keeps its preposition. Es fills the first position but does not refer to a person or thing.

  • Hier darf nicht gefilmt werden, auch nicht zum Spaß.

There must be no filming here, even as a joke.

Filmen is used without an object here, so the passive bans the activity generally.

  • Nach dem Training wurde noch etwas über Privatsphäre gestritten.

After training, there was still some arguing about privacy.

This is also subjectless: über Privatsphäre stays a prepositional phrase, and wurde is singular.

  • In unserem Verein wird nicht weggeschaut, sondern eingegriffen.

At our club, people intervene rather than look away.

Both wegschauen and eingreifen can form an impersonal passive. One wird serves both participles.

  • Es sollte mehr über respektvolles Verhalten gesprochen werden.

There should be more discussion about respectful behaviour.

The discussion topic follows über. Placeholder es disappears if that topic is placed first.

An activity without a grammatical subject

The impersonal process passive describes an activity without naming its doer. It is common with verbs such as flüstern, lachen and eingreifen. No accusative object is promoted to subject, so the sentence has no grammatical subject and uses singular wird.

UseFormExample
Intransitive verbPlace + wird + participleHier wird geflüstert.
Prepositional verbPrepositional phrase + wird + participleÜber andere wird nicht gelacht.
Plural inside a prepositional phrasePlural noun after a preposition does not trigger werdenÜber die Regeln wird gesprochen.

Placeholder es in first position

Es can fill the first position when nothing else is placed there. It is not the subject and has no meaning of its own. If a place, time or other phrase comes first, omit this placeholder es.

UseFormExample
With placeholder esEs + wird + other information + participleEs wird in der Umkleidekabine viel geflüstert.
With the place firstPlace + wird + other information + participleIn der Umkleidekabine wird viel geflüstert.
With the topic firstTopic phrase + wird + participleÜber Privatsphäre wird gesprochen.

Subjectless rules and expectations

The same subjectless pattern works with modal verbs: use a singular finite modal, followed by the participle and werden. A prepositional phrase remains unchanged; it still does not become a subject.

UseFormExample
RequirementPlace or time + muss + participle + werdenVor dem Eintreten muss angeklopft werden.
ProhibitionPlace + darf nicht + participle + werdenHier darf nicht gefilmt werden.
RecommendationTopic phrase + sollte + participle + werdenÜber respektvolles Verhalten sollte mehr gesprochen werden.
