Let me speak for myself in German

Help children explain their own needs and choose how adults support them. Use anstatt dass to contrast an action with a preferred alternative, making clear who does each action.

What you'll learn

  • Use anstatt dass with an explicit subject to introduce the action being replaced.
  • Place the finite verb at the end of the anstatt dass clause.
  • Distinguish different-subject anstatt dass clauses from same-subject statt ... zu phrases.
  • Offer children space to speak while keeping support available.

German phrases for let me speak for myself

  • Anstatt dass du alles erklärst, würde ich gerne zuerst sprechen.

Instead of you explaining everything, I'd like to speak first.

Du explains; ich wants to speak. The explicit subjects make this contrast clear.

  • Anstatt dass ich den Trainer anrufe, könntest du nach dem Training nachfragen.

Instead of me ringing the coach, you could ask after training.

Anrufe ends the anstatt dass clause. Use die Trainerin for a female coach.

  • Anstatt dass Papa antwortet, könntest du mir einen Moment geben?

Instead of Dad answering, could you give me a moment?

Papa is the subject of antwortet; du is the person being asked to give the child time.

  • Anstatt dass alle raten, lass deine Schwester erklären.

Instead of everyone guessing, let your sister explain.

Alle is the explicit subject of the alternative-action clause; raten comes last.

  • Anstatt dass ich dir die Worte vorgebe, hören wir uns deine Version an.

Instead of me choosing your words, let's hear your version.

Dir die Worte vorgeben means to tell you what words to use.

  • Anstatt dass die Lehrerin von mir hört, könntest du ihr eine Notiz schreiben.

Instead of the teacher hearing from me, you could write her a note.

Die Lehrerin is the subject of hört; du would write the note.

  • Anstatt dass du sofort eingreifst, könnte ich meine Frage zu Ende stellen?

Instead of you stepping in immediately, could I finish my question?

Eingreifst stays together at the end of the anstatt dass clause.

  • Anstatt dass wir für dich sprechen, wäre dir stille Unterstützung lieber?

Instead of us speaking for you, would you prefer some quiet support?

Stille Unterstützung suggests being there without taking over the conversation.

Anstatt dass: replacing one action with another

Anstatt dass means instead of and introduces the action that is not preferred or is being replaced. This clause has its own explicit subject, which can differ from the subject of the main clause. Put its finite verb at the end and separate the clauses with a comma.

UseFormExample
Basic patternAnstatt dass + subject + ... + finite verb, main clauseAnstatt dass du alles erklärst, spreche ich zuerst.
Different subjectsanstatt dass ich ... anrufe → du ...Anstatt dass ich den Trainer anrufe, fragst du selbst nach.
Separable verb stays togetheranstatt dass + du + ... + eingreifstAnstatt dass du sofort eingreifst, lässt du mich ausreden.

Position of the alternative-action clause

When the anstatt dass clause comes first, the main clause's finite verb follows the comma directly. The anstatt dass clause can also follow the main clause; its own verb still comes last.

UseFormExample
Alternative clause firstAnstatt dass ..., finite verb + subject + ...Anstatt dass Papa antwortet, könntest du mir einen Moment geben?
Alternative clause lastMain clause, anstatt dass + subject + ... + finite verbIch würde gerne zuerst sprechen, anstatt dass du alles erklärst.

Anstatt dass versus statt ... zu

Use anstatt dass when you need to name a separate subject, especially when the two actions have different subjects. With the same person doing both actions, statt ... zu is usually more concise. It has no explicit subject, so do not use it if that would change who does the action.

UseFormExample
Different peopleanstatt dass + explicit subject + finite verbAnstatt dass ich für dich spreche, erklärst du es selbst.
Same personstatt + ... + zu-infinitiveStatt für dich zu sprechen, höre ich dir zu.

More examples

Anstatt dass ich deine Wünsche erkläre, sagst du selbst, was du brauchst.

Instead of me explaining your wishes, you say yourself what you need.

Ich and du identify two different people carrying out the actions.

Möchtest du selbst antworten, anstatt dass ich für dich spreche?

Would you like to answer yourself instead of me speaking for you?

The anstatt dass clause follows the main clause; spreche still comes last.

Anstatt dass alle gleichzeitig reden, lassen wir dich erst einmal ausreden.

Instead of everyone talking at once, we'll let you finish first.

Reden is the clause-final finite verb with the subject alle.
