A back-up plan for independent travel in German
Prepare a calm back-up plan for a child's solo bus journey. Use verb-first clauses with sollte to describe something that might happen and explain what to do if it does.
What you'll learn
- Describe possible travel problems using Sollte … without wenn.
- Combine a tentative condition with a clear instruction or planned response.
- Distinguish conditional sollte ('should … happen') from sollte expressing advice ('ought to').
German phrases for a back-up plan for independent travel
Sollte dein Bus ausfallen, ruf mich an, bevor du eine andere Route wählst.
Should your bus be cancelled, ring me before choosing another route.
Sollte … ausfallen presents a possible cancellation, not an expected one.
Sollte ich meine Haltestelle verpassen, steige ich an der nächsten aus.
Should I miss my stop, I'll get off at the next one.
After the opening condition, the response begins steige ich.
Sollte dein Akku leer sein, benutze die Nummer auf dieser Karte.
Should your battery run out, use the number on this card.
Sollte … leer sein introduces the contingency; benutze gives the instruction.
Sollte der Fahrer die Route ändern, frag ihn, wo du aussteigen sollst.
Should the driver change the route, ask where to get off.
Opening sollte marks a possible event. Later sollst asks what you are supposed to do, not another condition.
Sollte ich mich unsicher fühlen, bleibe ich in der Nähe des Fahrers.
Should I feel unsure, I'll stay near the driver.
The condition describes a possible feeling; bleibe ich states the planned response.
Sollte der Bus voll sein, halte deine Tasche vor dir.
Should the bus be crowded, keep your bag in front of you.
Conditional sollte does not mean the bus ought to be crowded.
Solltest du früh ankommen, warte im Sportzentrum.
Should you arrive early, wait inside the sports centre.
With du, the verb-first form is solltest.
Sollte etwas Unerwartetes passieren, ist es wichtiger, Hilfe zu holen, als pünktlich zu sein.
Should anything unexpected happen, getting help matters more than being punctual.
The main clause starts ist es after the opening condition.

pünktlich
punctual; on time
Used for arriving or doing something at the agreed time.
A possible future contingency: Sollte …
Put Konjunktiv II sollte first, followed by the subject, with the main infinitive at the end. Do not add wenn. This means 'should … happen' or 'if … happens to': it leaves the event open rather than predicting it. The construction sounds slightly formal but works well in a carefully stated back-up plan.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Pattern | Sollte + subject + … + infinitive, … | Sollte der Bus ausfallen, ruf mich an. |
| With du | Solltest du + … + infinitive, … | Solltest du früh ankommen, warte im Sportzentrum. |
| Subject agreement | ich/er/sie/es sollte; du solltest; wir/sie/Sie sollten; ihr solltet | Sollten wir uns verspäten, rufen wir an. |
Adding the response
Separate the condition and response with a comma. After a fronted conditional clause, a statement starts with its finite verb followed by the subject. An instruction can begin directly with its imperative verb. A present-tense response can express what you will do in that future situation.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Planned action | Sollte …, finite verb + subject + … | Sollte ich meine Haltestelle verpassen, steige ich an der nächsten aus. |
| Instruction | Sollte …, imperative + … | Sollte der Bus voll sein, halte deine Tasche vor dir. |
Condition, not advice
In this verb-first conditional pattern, sollte introduces a possible event. It does not recommend that event. In an ordinary statement such as Du solltest mich anrufen, solltest instead gives advice: 'You should call me.'
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Contingency | Solltest du …, … | Solltest du Hilfe brauchen, ruf mich an. — Should you need help, call me. |
| Advice | Du solltest … | Du solltest mich anrufen. — You should call me. |
