When homework feedback seems unfair in German
Explore unclear homework feedback together, check what has happened and ask for clarification without assigning blame. Use the Perfekt process passive to describe completed actions such as checking, marking and correcting.
What you'll learn
- Describe completed marking and feedback actions using ist/sind + Partizip II + worden.
- Ask neutral questions about what has been checked or communicated.
- Distinguish passive worden from geworden, meaning 'become'.

Reporting completed actions with the Perfekt passive
Use a present-tense form of sein + the action's past participle + worden. This focuses on what has been done, so you can leave the person responsible unnamed. With third-person subjects, use ist for singular and sind for plural.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Singular | ist + Partizip II + worden | Die Antwort ist überprüft worden. |
| Plural | sind + Partizip II + worden | Die Antworten sind überprüft worden. |
| Negative | ist/sind + nicht + Partizip II + worden | Die Punkte sind nicht geändert worden. |
Word order in questions and embedded clauses
In a yes/no question, ist or sind comes first, while the participle and worden stay at the end. In an embedded clause, the finite form of sein follows worden.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Yes/no question | Ist/Sind + subject + … + Partizip II + worden? | Sind beide Seiten überprüft worden? |
| Embedded question | question word + … + Partizip II + worden + ist/sind | Wir möchten wissen, wie die Punkte berechnet worden sind. |
Worden, not geworden, in the passive
The Perfekt passive uses worden, without ge-. Use geworden when werden itself means 'become'. Do not replace passive worden with geworden.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Completed passive action | ist + geändert + worden | Die Aufgabenstellung ist geändert worden. — The task instructions have been changed. |
| Becoming different | ist + adjective + geworden | Die Aufgabenstellung ist klarer geworden. — The task instructions have become clearer. |
| Common error | geändert worden, not geändert geworden | Die Abgabefrist ist geändert worden. |
