It depends on the details in German

Use je nachdem followed by ob or a question word to explain how a decision depends on changing information. These clauses identify the deciding detail: whether something is open, who joins in, or when someone finishes.

What you'll learn

  • Explain what information determines a choice using je nachdem.
  • Choose ob for a yes/no uncertainty and a question word for a specific detail.
  • Place the finite verb at the end of the embedded clause.
  • Use dependency clauses before or after the main clause.

German phrases for it depends on the details

  • Je nachdem, ob er offen ist, probieren wir den kleineren Eingang aus.

Depending on whether it's open, we'll try the smaller entrance.

Ob introduces the yes/no uncertainty. Er refers to der Eingang; ist ends the embedded clause.

  • Wir können den Entwurf ändern, je nachdem, welche Materialien verfügbar sind.

We can change the design depending on which materials are available.

Welche Materialien identifies the deciding detail; sind comes at the end.

Depending on how many people reply, we'll need another table.

Wie viele introduces a quantity that determines what is needed.

  • Ich packe noch etwas zum Drüberziehen ein, je nachdem, was der Wetterbericht sagt.

I'll pack an extra layer depending on what the forecast says.

Was introduces the forecast's content as the deciding information.

Depending on when you finish, we might still catch the earlier train.

Wann introduces the deciding time; bist closes the embedded clause.

  • Wir können die Aufgaben aufteilen, je nachdem, wer mitmachen möchte.

We can divide the jobs depending on who wants to join in.

Wer identifies the participants. The finite verb möchte comes last, after mitmachen.

  • Je nachdem, wie ausführlich deine Antwort ist, reicht vielleicht ein Absatz.

Depending on how detailed your answer is, one paragraph may be enough.

Wie ausführlich introduces the degree of detail that determines the choice.

  • Ich wähle ein anderes Beispiel, je nachdem, welchen Teil du verwirrend findest.

I'll choose a different example depending on which part you find confusing.

Welchen Teil identifies the relevant part; findest ends the embedded clause.

Choose the deciding detail

Je nachdem means “depending on.” Follow it with ob when the uncertainty is yes/no, or with a question word when the choice depends on a specific detail. The expression leaves the outcome dependent on that information.

UseFormExample
Whetherje nachdem, ob …Je nachdem, ob er offen ist, probieren wir den kleineren Eingang aus.
Whichje nachdem, welche/welchen …Wir können den Entwurf ändern, je nachdem, welche Materialien verfügbar sind.
Quantity or degreeje nachdem, wie viele / wie ausführlich …Je nachdem, wie ausführlich deine Antwort ist, reicht vielleicht ein Absatz.
Time, person or contentje nachdem, wann / wer / was …Wir können die Aufgaben aufteilen, je nachdem, wer mitmachen möchte.

Put the embedded verb last

The clause after ob or the question word has its finite verb at the end, not the word order of a direct question. If it contains an infinitive and a finite modal verb, the modal verb comes last.

UseFormExample
One finite verbquestion word + subject + other information + finite verb… je nachdem, welchen Teil du verwirrend findest.
Question word as subjectwer + other information + finite verb… je nachdem, wer mitmacht.
With a modal verbquestion word + … + infinitive + finite modal verb… je nachdem, wer mitmachen möchte.

Position and punctuation

You can put the dependency expression first or after the main clause. When it comes first, the main clause begins with its finite verb. Write je nachdem as two words and use a comma before ob or the question word; also separate the dependency expression from the main clause with a comma.

UseFormExample
Dependency firstJe nachdem, wann … verb, main-clause verb + subject …Je nachdem, wann du fertig bist, erwischen wir vielleicht noch den früheren Zug.
Dependency lastMain clause, je nachdem, wann … verb.Wir erwischen vielleicht noch den früheren Zug, je nachdem, wann du fertig bist.
