Review: sich lassen
Use sich lassen plus a bare infinitive to describe what can be done to something. Do not add zu.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Practical possibility | subject + lässt/lassen sich + infinitive | Diese Schnalle lässt sich fester ziehen. |
Review: free wer-relative clauses
Wer means whoever in a general statement about people. The wer-clause has its finite verb at the end; resumptive der begins the main clause, followed by its finite verb.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| General responsibility | Wer ... verb, der + finite verb ... | Wer ein Sicherheitsproblem bemerkt, der sollte es sofort ansprechen. |
Review: past modal counterfactuals
Use hätte plus two infinitives for retrospective advice or missed possibilities. The modal infinitive comes last: sollen for should have, können for could have.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Retrospective advice | hätte/hätten ... + action infinitive + sollen | Wir hätten mehr Zeit einplanen sollen. |
| Missed possibility | hätte/hätten ... + action infinitive + können | Wir hätten früher anfangen können. |
Review: perfect infinitives
A perfect infinitive marks an action as earlier than the main-clause feeling or claim. Use the past participle with zu haben or zu sein, according to the verb's perfect auxiliary.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Earlier completed action | Partizip II + zu haben / zu sein | Ich bin erleichtert, meine Quellen dokumentiert zu haben. |
Review: nicht nur ... sondern auch
Place each part directly before the parallel element it highlights. Put a comma before sondern.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Adding a second benefit | nicht nur + element, sondern auch + parallel element | Die Änderung ist nicht nur praktisch, sondern auch fairer für alle. |
Review: reciprocal einander
Einander means each other and explicitly marks a mutual action, rather than an action directed at oneself. With prepositions, use compounds such as miteinander or aufeinander.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Mutual action | einander + verb | Wir dürfen einander widersprechen. |
| With a preposition | mit + einander → miteinander | Wir sprechen respektvoll miteinander. |
Review: es sei denn
Es sei denn introduces an exception to an otherwise valid statement. In this familiar pattern, the following clause has normal verb-second order.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Exception | rule, es sei denn, subject + finite verb ... | Das Gerät bleibt ausgeschaltet, es sei denn, es wird für eine Gesundheitskontrolle gebraucht. |
Review: adversative während
Während can mean whereas, contrasting two statements rather than describing simultaneous events. Its clause has the finite verb at the end.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Contrast | main clause, während ... finite verb | Wir dürfen einander widersprechen, während Beleidigungen niemals akzeptabel sind. |
Review: impersonal passive
The impersonal passive focuses on an activity without naming an actor or promoting an object to subject. Use singular wird. Placeholder es is possible in first position but disappears when another element comes first. In rules, wird nicht can express a firm prohibition.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Prepositional phrase first | prepositional phrase + wird + nicht + Partizip II | Über das Aussehen anderer wird nicht gescherzt. |
| Placeholder es first | Es wird ... + Partizip II | Es wird nicht über das Aussehen anderer gescherzt. |
