Whoever takes part in German
Use wer …, der … to talk about anyone who meets a condition without naming them. This pattern is useful for inclusive invitations, shared responsibilities and friendly group rules.
What you'll learn
- Use wer to mean “whoever” or “anyone who” in general statements about people.
- Place the finite verb at the end of the wer clause.
- Resume the reference with der and put the main clause’s finite verb immediately after it.

Wer …, der …: anyone who meets a condition
A free relative clause with wer describes a person without a preceding noun: wer means “whoever” or “anyone who,” not a question here. The main clause uses der to refer back to that person. This pattern can include people of any gender. In these examples, wer and der are both subjects and take singular verbs.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Condition or description | Wer … + finite verb | Wer mehr Platz braucht, … |
| Statement about that person | der + finite verb + … | … der kann den anderen Tisch benutzen. |
Clause-final verb, then verb-second order
Put the finite (conjugated) verb at the end of the wer clause and separate the clauses with a comma. In the main clause, der occupies the first position, so the finite verb follows immediately. If the main clause also has an infinitive, it comes at the end. Der can sometimes be omitted in German, but keep it in this unit’s pattern.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Wer clause | Wer + remaining information + finite verb, | Wer früher fertig ist, |
| Main clause with an infinitive | der + finite verb + remaining information + infinitive. | der kann die Antworten überprüfen. |
| Main clause without an infinitive | der + finite verb + remaining information. | der ist für die Rückgabe verantwortlich. |
