What happened without anyone noticing in German

Use ohne dass to describe something happening without another event accompanying it. This is especially useful when the two clauses have different subjects: one person acts, but someone else does not notice, ask or intervene.

What you'll learn

  • Describe an absent accompanying event with ohne dass.
  • Name the subject of each clause clearly.
  • Place the finite verb at the end of the ohne dass clause.
  • Distinguish ohne dass from same-subject ohne ... zu.

German phrases for what happened without anyone noticing

  • Die Besprechung endete, ohne dass jemand das Hauptproblem erwähnte.

The meeting ended without anyone mentioning the main problem.

The subjects are die Besprechung and jemand. Ohne dass already expresses the absence: jemand does not need to become niemand.

  • Ich änderte meine Antwort, ohne dass der Lehrer es bemerkte.

I changed my answer without the teacher noticing.

Der Lehrer is the explicit subject of the second clause; bemerkte comes last.

  • Man kann anderer Meinung sein, ohne dass das Gespräch zu einem Streit wird.

You can disagree without the conversation turning into an argument.

Man expresses general English 'you'. The conversation is the subject of the ohne dass clause.

  • Die Datei verschwand, ohne dass einer von uns beiden sie löschte.

The file disappeared without either of us deleting it.

Ohne dass einer von uns beiden means that neither of the two people did it. No extra negative is needed.

  • Sie erklärte das Rätsel, ohne dass ich fragen musste.

She explained the puzzle without me having to ask.

The subjects change from sie to ich. The finite verb musste follows fragen at the end.

  • Die Schlange rückte vor, ohne dass wir es bemerkten.

The queue moved forward without us realising.

Wir is the subject of the absent noticing event; bemerkten comes last.

  • Er akzeptierte die Korrektur, ohne dass ihm sein Stolz im Weg stand.

He accepted the correction without his pride getting in the way.

Sein Stolz is the subject of the second clause, not ihm. The finite verb stand ends the clause.

  • Wir fanden eine Lösung, ohne dass jemand völlig aufgeben musste.

We found a solution without anyone having to give up completely.

Jemand names who would have had to give up. The finite verb musste comes last.

An event that does not accompany the main event

Ohne dass means 'without' followed by a full clause. It states that the main event happens but the accompanying event does not. Separate the clauses with a comma. Do not add nicht or niemand simply to translate 'without'.

An explicit subject and a clause-final verb

The ohne dass clause has its own explicit subject, often different from the main-clause subject. Its finite verb—the verb carrying tense and agreement—goes at the end. With a modal such as musste, the infinitive comes before it.

UseFormExample

Choosing ohne dass or ohne ... zu

Use ohne dass when you need to name a separate subject. If the same person performs both actions, ohne ... zu is usually more concise. Ohne dass is also possible with the same subject, but it repeats that subject explicitly.
