It seems that way, but is it? in German

Use als ob with Konjunktiv II to describe how something looks, sounds or feels without presenting that impression as an established fact. This can soften an observation, although comments about someone’s behaviour can still sound critical.

What you'll learn

  • Describe appearances and impressions using als ob.
  • Place the Konjunktiv II verb at the end of the als ob clause.
  • Use wäre, hätte, wüsste and other one-word forms to signal distance from an apparent reality.
  • Distinguish an impression from a claim that something is definitely true or false.

German phrases for it seems that way, but is it?

  • Es sieht so aus, als ob der Raum völlig leer wäre.

It looks as though the room were completely empty.

Wäre marks the room’s apparent emptiness as an impression, not a confirmed fact.

  • Du klingst, als ob du überhaupt keine Wahl hättest.

You sound as though you had no choice at all.

Hättest agrees with du. Here it describes an apparent present situation.

  • Er tut so, als ob er die geheimsten Gedanken aller anderen wüsste.

He acts as if he knew everyone's private thoughts.

Wüsste is the one-word Konjunktiv II form of wissen. Er tut so often suggests pretence.

  • Diese Erklärung klingt so, als ob alles meine Schuld wäre.

That explanation sounds as though everything were my fault.

The als ob clause describes what the explanation seems to imply, without accepting the blame as fact.

  • Sie redet, als ob sie unbegrenzt Zeit hätte.

She talks as if she had unlimited time.

Hätte expresses apparent possession of time, not a past event.

  • Es fühlt sich so an, als ob diese Warteschlange endlos wäre.

It feels as though this queue were never-ending.

Wäre frames endlos as a subjective impression.

  • Du beschreibst es so, als ob es nur eine mögliche Antwort gäbe.

You describe it as if there were only one possible answer.

Es gäbe is the Konjunktiv II form of es gibt: 'there is/are'.

  • Er verhält sich so, als ob die Entscheidung allein bei ihm läge.

He behaves as though the decision were his alone.

Läge comes from liegen. Die Entscheidung liegt bei ihm means that the decision is his to make.

An impression, not an established fact

Als ob means 'as if' or 'as though'. Konjunktiv II distances the speaker from the situation described: it may be doubtful, exaggerated or unreal. The construction does not by itself prove that the impression is false.

UseFormExample
Visual impressionEs sieht so aus, als ob …Es sieht so aus, als ob der Raum leer wäre.
Impression from speechDu klingst, als ob …Du klingst, als ob du keine Wahl hättest.

Clause-final Konjunktiv II

Separate the als ob clause with a comma. After als ob, place the subject and other information before the finite verb. The Konjunktiv II verb goes at the end and agrees with the subject.

UseFormExample
Basic patternmain clause, als ob + subject + other information + Konjunktiv IISie redet, als ob sie unbegrenzt Zeit hätte.

Useful one-word forms

Synthetic forms are single-word Konjunktiv II forms. Learn these common forms as chunks. In these comparisons, they describe an apparent present situation; they do not automatically indicate past time.
