- Keep main-clause word order in both parts.
- Use the pattern naturally when discussing plans, concerns and decisions.

Acknowledge first, contrast second
Zwar ... aber means roughly 'admittedly ... but' or 'it is true that ... but'. The zwar part accepts a point as valid; the aber part gives the contrast and usually carries the main message. Zwar is not simply a stronger word for 'certainly': it signals an upcoming reservation.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Acknowledged point | zwar + acknowledged information | Die Idee ist zwar kreativ, ... |
| Contrasting judgement | aber + contrasting information | ... aber sie braucht mehr Vorbereitung. |
Main-clause word order
Both parts keep main-clause word order: the finite verb is in the second position. Zwar commonly appears inside the first clause. Aber links the clauses without occupying a position inside the second clause, so it is normally followed by the subject and then the finite verb. Put a comma before aber.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Zwar inside the clause | Subject + finite verb + zwar + remaining information | Die Erklärung ist zwar ausführlich, aber sie ist nicht klar. |
| Zwar after a complete verb | Subject + finite verb + zwar | Die günstigere Version funktioniert zwar, aber sie hält nicht so lange. |
| After aber | aber + subject + finite verb + remaining information | Wir haben zwar die Erlaubnis, aber wir brauchen immer noch einen Plan. |
Starting with zwar
You can also place zwar first. It then occupies the first position, so the finite verb comes immediately after it, followed by the subject. The clause after aber keeps its usual order.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Fronted zwar | Zwar + finite verb + subject + remaining information, aber + subject + finite verb + remaining information | Zwar ist die Fahrt kurz, aber die Verbindung ist unzuverlässig. |
