Club Day Stories in German

Talk with your child about a happy club day using the German Perfekt. Practise verbs ending in -ieren: their past participles end in -iert and do not take ge-.

German phrases for club day stories

  • Ich habe für dich einen Platz im Sportverein reserviert.

    I have reserved a place for you at the sports club.

    Reservieren becomes reserviert, without ge-. Für dich means 'for you'.

  • Ich habe deine Hausaufgaben kontrolliert.

    I have checked your homework.

    Kontrolliert means 'checked' here. Hausaufgaben is plural.

  • Das neue Fahrradlicht hat gut funktioniert.

    The new bike light has worked well.

    Use hat with the singular subject das neue Fahrradlicht. Funktioniert has no ge-.

  • Ich habe mit deinem Trainer telefoniert.

    I have talked to your coach on the phone.

    Mit jemandem telefonieren means 'to talk to someone on the phone'. For a female coach, use mit deiner Trainerin.

  • Du hast heute mit deinem Team trainiert.

    You have trained with your team today.

    Use du hast when speaking to your child. Trainieren becomes trainiert.

  • Wir haben für Samstag eine Verabredung zum Spielen organisiert.

    We have organised a playdate for Saturday.

    Eine Verabredung zum Spielen means 'a playdate'. Für Samstag means 'for Saturday'.

  • Du hast den neuen Snack probiert.

    You have tried the new snack.

    Probieren means 'to try' or 'to taste'. Its participle is probiert.

  • Wir haben das Zimmer für deinen Geburtstag dekoriert.

    We have decorated the room for your birthday.

    Dekorieren becomes dekoriert. Für deinen Geburtstag means 'for your birthday'.

Past participles ending in -iert

For verbs ending in -ieren, replace -ieren with -iert. Do not add ge-.

Build the Perfekt with haben

All eight verbs in this guide use haben in the Perfekt. In a simple statement, the form of haben goes in second position and the participle goes at the end. German often uses the Perfekt where English uses the simple past.

For a yes/no question, put hast first. Trainiert stays at the end.

Today we decorated the room.

When heute comes first, haben still takes second position.
