Small Kind Gifts in German

Practise talking about small, thoughtful gifts. Use für to say who something is for. Für always takes the accusative case.

What you'll learn

  • Say who a gift or helpful item is for.
  • Use accusative articles after für.
  • Use für mich, für dich, für ihn and für sie.

German phrases for small kind gifts

  • Diese Karte ist für die Lehrerin.

This card is for the teacher.

Die Lehrerin means a female teacher. For a male teacher, use für den Lehrer.

  • Wir kaufen einen Ball für den Sportverein.

We are buying a ball for the sports club.

Der Sportverein becomes den Sportverein after für.

  • Dieses Buch ist für das Kind von nebenan.

This book is for the child next door.

Das Kind keeps the article das in the accusative. Von nebenan means “from next door.”

  • Diese Äpfel sind für die Kinder beim Spieltreffen.

These apples are for the children at the playdate.

Die Kinder is plural. The article die stays the same after für.

  • Ich habe ein extra Sandwich für dich eingepackt.

I packed an extra sandwich for you.

Für dich means “for you” when speaking informally to one person, such as your child.

  • Kannst du ein Bild für mich malen?

Can you draw a picture for me?

Für mich means “for me.” Ein Bild malen is a natural way to talk about making a picture with a child.

  • Dein Bruder braucht einen Bleistift. Dieser hier ist für ihn.

Your brother needs a pencil. This one is for him.

Use ihn after für for “him.” Dieser hier refers to the masculine noun Bleistift.

  • Deine Freundin kommt zu Besuch. Diese Aufkleber sind für sie.

Your friend is visiting. These stickers are for her.

Freundin means a female friend. Für sie means “for her” here.
