A Gentle Correction in German

Use nicht ... sondern and kein ... sondern to gently correct a mix-up: first say what is not right, then give the correct information.

What you'll learn

  • Correct everyday misunderstandings using sondern.
  • Choose nicht or kein to match what you are correcting.
  • Avoid repeating words when the meaning is clear.

German phrases for a gentle correction

  • Wir gehen nicht zu Fuß zur Schule, sondern fahren mit dem Bus.

We are not walking to school, but taking the bus.

German uses zu Fuß gehen for walking and mit dem Bus fahren for taking the bus.

  • Dein Buch ist nicht in der Küche, sondern in deiner Schultasche.

Your book is not in the kitchen, but in your school bag.

Place nicht before the incorrect location and sondern before the correct one.

  • Fußball ist nicht am Montag, sondern am Dienstag.

Football is not on Monday, but on Tuesday.

Use am with days of the week.

  • Das ist nicht deine Brotdose, sondern meine.

This is not your lunchbox, but mine.

Meine means 'mine' here and replaces meine Brotdose. Use nicht before a noun phrase with a possessive such as deine.

  • Das ist kein Kugelschreiber, sondern ein Bleistift.

That is not a pen, but a pencil.

Kein negates ein Kugelschreiber. Both nouns are masculine and nominative after ist.

  • Das ist keine Süßigkeit, sondern ein Stück Obst.

This is not a sweet, but a piece of fruit.

Use keine with the feminine noun Süßigkeit. Ein Stück Obst is a common way to say 'a piece of fruit'.

  • Wir brauchen keine neue Tasche, sondern eine neue Brotdose.

We do not need a new bag, but a new lunchbox.

Brauchen takes an accusative object. With these feminine nouns, use keine neue and eine neue.

  • Du hast keinen großen Zahn verloren, sondern einen kleinen.

You have not lost a big tooth, but a small one.

Zahn is masculine and accusative here: keinen großen Zahn. Einen kleinen means 'a small one'; Zahn is understood.

Correcting with sondern

Use sondern when the second part replaces a negated idea with the correct one. Aber expresses a contrast instead. Put a comma before sondern.

UseFormExample

Correct an actionnegated clause, sondern + correcting clauseWir gehen nicht zu Fuß zur Schule, sondern fahren mit dem Bus.

Choosing nicht or kein

Use nicht to negate actions, locations, times, or noun phrases with possessives such as dein. Use kein to negate a noun that would otherwise have ein or no article. Kein changes its ending to match the noun's gender, number and case.
