Let Me Clarify in German

Use nicht ... sondern and kein ... sondern to gently correct a misunderstanding: first say what is not correct, then give the correct information.

What you'll learn

  • Correct details such as days, places and feelings.
  • Choose between nicht and kein when rejecting an alternative.
  • Use sondern to mean “but rather” without repeating the whole sentence.

German phrases for let me clarify

  • Dein Clubtreffen findet nicht am Dienstag, sondern am Donnerstag statt.

Your club is not on Tuesday, but on Thursday.

Clubtreffen means “club meeting.” Nicht goes before the day you are correcting.

  • Wir treffen uns nicht in der Bibliothek, sondern im Park.

We are meeting not at the library, but at the park.

Wir treffen uns means “we are meeting.” Im is short for in dem.

  • Das ist nicht dein Ladegerät, sondern meins.

This is not your charger, but mine.

Meins replaces mein Ladegerät. Use nicht to correct a phrase with a possessive such as dein.

  • Ich bin nicht wütend, sondern besorgt.

I am not angry, but worried.

Nicht ... sondern directly contrasts the two feelings.

  • Du brauchst kein Tablet, sondern ein Notizbuch.

You need not a tablet, but a notebook.

Kein negates ein Tablet. This corrects which item is needed.

  • Das ist kein Film, sondern ein Spiel.

That is not a film, but a game.

After ist, use nominative forms: kein Film and ein Spiel.

  • Wir kaufen kein neues Fahrrad, sondern einen neuen Helm.

We are buying not a new bike, but a new helmet.

Kaufen takes an accusative object: kein neues Fahrrad is neuter; einen neuen Helm is masculine.

  • Dein Freund möchte keine große Party, sondern eine kleine Übernachtungsparty.

Your friend wants not a big party, but a small sleepover.

Möchte is a gentle way to express what someone wants. For a female friend, use deine Freundin.
