A Gentle Correction in German

Use calm, simple German to clear up everyday mixups about your baby. After a negative statement, sondern introduces the correct alternative: “not this, but that.”

What you'll learn

  • Use nicht ... sondern to correct an action, description or specific item.
  • Use kein ... sondern to correct a noun with no article or with an indefinite article.
  • Choose familiar words for feeding, care and everyday outings.

German phrases for a gentle correction

  • Das ist kein Wasser, sondern Milch.

That is not water, but milk.

Use kein with Wasser because you are saying it is not water at all. Milch needs no article here.

  • Das ist kein Spielzeug, sondern ein Thermometer.

This is not a toy, but a thermometer.

Das ist is natural for both “this is” and “that is.” Both Spielzeug and Thermometer are neuter.

  • Du bist nicht hungrig, sondern müde.

You are not hungry, but tired.

Use nicht before the adjective hungrig. You do not need to repeat du bist after sondern.

  • Wir gehen nicht einkaufen, sondern zum Arzt.

We are not going to the shops, but to the doctor.

Einkaufen gehen means “to go shopping,” a natural way to express going to the shops. Zum Arzt means “to the doctor.”

  • Das ist nicht deine Flasche, sondern meine.

That is not your bottle, but mine.

Use nicht before deine Flasche. Meine means “mine” and stands in for meine Flasche.

  • Das ist keine Decke, sondern ein Handtuch.

This is not a blanket, but a towel.

Decke is feminine, so use keine. Handtuch is neuter, so use ein.

  • Du brauchst keinen Löffel, sondern ein Lätzchen.

You do not need a spoon, but a bib.

Brauchen takes an accusative object: der Löffel becomes keinen Löffel. For neuter Lätzchen, use ein.

  • Ich wasche dir nicht die Haare, sondern die Füße.

I am not washing your hair, but your feet.

German often uses dir plus the definite article for your body parts: dir die Haare means “your hair” here.

Correcting with sondern

Use sondern after a negative statement to replace the rejected idea with the correct one. Put a comma before sondern. Unlike aber, which gives a general contrast, sondern means “but rather” or “instead.”
