Not that, but this in German

Use nicht ... sondern and kein ... sondern to gently replace a mistaken idea with the correct one: “not that, but this.” Say what is not correct first, then give the correction.

What you'll learn

  • Correct a misunderstanding using sondern after a negative.
  • Choose nicht or kein for the rejected alternative.
  • Keep corrections short by avoiding repeated words.

German phrases for not that, but this

  • Das ist kein Wolf, sondern ein Hund.

That is not a wolf, but a dog.

Kein rejects the noun Wolf; sondern introduces the correct animal.

  • Ich meine nicht die Schüssel, sondern den Deckel.

I mean the lid, not the bowl.

For the sondern pattern, put the rejected item first: the bowl, then the lid.

  • Sie ist nicht wütend, sondern müde.

She is not angry, but tired.

Nicht ... sondern replaces one description with another.

  • Wir brauchen kein Klebeband, sondern Kleber.

We need glue, not sticky tape.

Put the unwanted material first. Kein negates Klebeband.

  • Es ist nicht kaputt, sondern nur ausgeschaltet.

It is not broken, just switched off.

Sondern nur means “but just” and makes the correction reassuring.

  • Ich habe nicht Donnerstag gesagt, sondern Dienstag.

    I said Tuesday, not Thursday.

The rejected day comes first; sondern introduces the intended day.

  • Das ist nicht dein Schal, sondern meiner.

This is not your scarf, but mine.

Nicht rejects dein Schal as a whole; sondern introduces the correction.

  • Wir warten nicht auf Papa, sondern auf Mama.

We are not waiting for Dad, but for Mum.

Keep auf with both alternatives: nicht auf Papa, sondern auf Mama.

Reject first, then correct

Sondern means “but rather”: it replaces a rejected idea with the correct one. The first alternative must be negated. Unlike a simple contrast with aber, this pattern says “not X—instead, Y.” Put a comma before sondern.

UseFormExample
Correct a descriptionnicht X, sondern YSie ist nicht wütend, sondern müde.
Correct an itemkein X, sondern YDas ist kein Wolf, sondern ein Hund.
Reorder an English correctionEnglish: Y, not X → German: nicht X, sondern YIch meine nicht die Schüssel, sondern den Deckel.

Choosing nicht or kein

Use kein to reject a noun that would otherwise have ein/eine or no article. Use nicht for descriptions, names, and phrases with a definite article or possessive. Place nicht directly before the alternative you want to correct.

UseFormExample
Noun with an indefinite articlekein Wolf, sondern ein HundDas ist kein Wolf, sondern ein Hund.
Material without an articlekein Klebeband, sondern KleberWir brauchen kein Klebeband, sondern Kleber.
Phrase with a definite articlenicht die Schüssel, sondern den DeckelIch meine nicht die Schüssel, sondern den Deckel.
Phrase with a possessivenicht dein Schal, sondern meinerDas ist nicht dein Schal, sondern meiner.

Keep the correction short

You do not need to repeat shared words after sondern. Link matching alternatives, such as two descriptions or two phrases with auf. Add nur when the correction means “just” or “only.”

UseFormExample
Two descriptionsnicht + description, sondern + descriptionSie ist nicht wütend, sondern müde.
Two prepositional phrasesnicht auf X, sondern auf YWir warten nicht auf Papa, sondern auf Mama.
A reassuring correctionnicht X, sondern nur YEs ist nicht kaputt, sondern nur ausgeschaltet.
