Let alone the bigger demand in German

Use geschweige denn (“let alone”) to reject a larger expectation when even a smaller one is unmet or barely achievable. This gives disproportionate demands a clear, measured response: establish the limit first, then name what is even less plausible.

What you'll learn

  • Place expectations in ascending order of difficulty or implausibility.
  • Use geschweige denn after negative statements and limiting expressions such as kaum.
  • Link parallel nouns, adjectives or verb phrases without unnecessarily repeating shared material.
  • Use geschweige denn, dass with an explicit subject and a clause-final finite verb.

German phrases for let alone the bigger demand

  • Ich habe die Zusammenfassung nicht gelesen, geschweige denn den gesamten Bericht.

I haven't read the summary, let alone the entire report.

The two objects are parallel; gelesen is understood after the second.

  • Wir können kaum ein Pilotprojekt finanzieren, geschweige denn eine landesweite Kampagne.

We can barely fund a pilot, let alone a national campaign.

Kaum supplies the limiting meaning: the smaller project is already barely affordable.

  • Er hat das Problem nicht anerkannt, geschweige denn eine Lösung angeboten.

He hasn't acknowledged the problem, let alone offered a solution.

Two parallel participial phrases share the subject and hat.

  • Ich würde das nicht einmal im privaten Rahmen weitergeben, geschweige denn veröffentlichen.

I wouldn't share that privately, let alone publish it.

Nicht einmal emphasizes that even the smaller step is ruled out; the two infinitives are parallel.

  • Es gibt kaum Spielraum für Diskussionen, geschweige denn für substanzielle Verhandlungen.

There's scarcely room for discussion, let alone meaningful negotiation.

Repeating für makes the two parallel prepositional phrases clear.

  • Sie hat nicht zugesagt, an der Sitzung teilzunehmen, geschweige denn sie zu leiten.

She hasn't agreed to attend, let alone chair the meeting.

The two zu-infinitive phrases contrast attending with taking on the greater responsibility of chairing.

  • Wir wissen nicht, ob es zutreffend ist, geschweige denn repräsentativ.

We don't know whether it's accurate, let alone representative.

The parallel adjectives contrast basic accuracy with the stronger claim of representativeness.

  • Ich kann der Argumentation kaum folgen, geschweige denn ihre Implikationen erklären.

I can hardly follow the argument, let alone explain its implications.

Two infinitive phrases share ich kann; explaining the implications is the greater demand.

Start with the smaller unmet expectation

Geschweige denn builds a negative scale: if the first thing is not true or is barely possible, the second is even less plausible. Use a negative or limiting first statement, commonly with nicht, nicht einmal or kaum. Do not add another nicht merely to carry the negative meaning into the second element.

UseFormExample
Negative starting pointnicht + smaller expectation, geschweige denn + larger expectationIch habe die Zusammenfassung nicht gelesen, geschweige denn den gesamten Bericht.
Limiting starting pointkaum + smaller possibility, geschweige denn + larger possibilityWir können kaum ein Pilotprojekt finanzieren, geschweige denn eine landesweite Kampagne.

Keep the linked elements parallel

Link constituents with the same grammatical role: objects with objects, adjectives with adjectives, or verb phrases with verb phrases. Shared material can remain unspoken when its meaning is clear. Retain any case or preposition required by the construction. Put a comma before geschweige denn.

UseFormExample

Use a full clause for a separate subject

When the second proposition needs its own explicit subject, use geschweige denn, dass. The dass clause states the even less plausible proposition, with its finite verb at the end. Put a comma before geschweige denn and another before dass.

UseFormExample
Separate subjectnegative or limiting statement, geschweige denn, dass + subject + … + finite verbIch verstehe die Aufgabe kaum, geschweige denn, dass mein Kind sie allein lösen kann.

More examples

Wir haben morgens kaum Zeit für ein kurzes Frühstück, geschweige denn für ein aufwendiges.

We barely have time for a quick breakfast in the morning, let alone an elaborate one.

The second expectation demands more time; the parallel für phrases keep the contrast compact.

Unser Kind kann die Anleitung noch nicht lesen, geschweige denn die Aufgabe selbstständig bearbeiten.

Our child can't read the instructions yet, let alone complete the task independently.

The second verb phrase names a more demanding task.

Ich verstehe die Aufgabe kaum, geschweige denn, dass mein Kind sie allein lösen kann.

I can barely understand the task, let alone expect my child to solve it alone.

The subject changes from ich to mein Kind; the full dass clause ends with kann.
