When the outcome stays the same in German
Use fronted ob ... oder clauses to show that a principle, request or outcome holds regardless of which alternative applies. This lets you express steady expectations about fairness, respect and curiosity.
What you'll learn
- Present alternatives with ob ... oder while keeping the main message unchanged.
- Use clause-final verbs in the alternative clause and a separate main clause after the comma.
- Distinguish irrelevance constructions from indirect questions and either-or choices.

Alternatives that do not change the main message
Ob ... oder means 'regardless of whether ... or ...' here. The opening clause names alternatives, but neither changes the validity of the following statement or request.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Two alternatives | Ob + alternative A + oder + alternative B, main clause. | Ob wir gewinnen oder verlieren, der Ablauf sollte fair sein. |
| An alternative and its negation | Ob + subordinate clause + oder nicht, main clause. | Ob es gelingt oder nicht, wir lernen daraus. |
Verb placement and the following main clause
Use subordinate-clause word order inside the ob clause: the finite verb comes at the end. Alternatives can share a final verb, or each can have its own verb. In the pattern practised here, the fronted clause stands outside the following main clause: after the comma, a statement keeps its own subject–verb order. A direct instruction can follow instead.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Shared final verb | Ob + subject + A oder B + finite verb, subject + finite verb + ... | Ob es Wochen oder Monate dauert, Genauigkeit ist wichtiger als Schnelligkeit. |
| Separate verbs | Ob + subject + verb A + oder + verb B, subject + finite verb + ... | Ob du zustimmst oder widersprichst, ich möchte eine begründete Antwort. |
| Following instruction | Ob + subject + A oder B + finite verb, instruction. | Ob das Publikum wohlwollend oder skeptisch ist, erläutere deine Belege. |
Not a question and not a choice
An indirect ob question leaves an answer open. Entweder ... oder presents a choice or competing possibilities. The irrelevance construction instead says that the main message applies whichever alternative is true.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Irrelevance | Ob ... oder ..., unchanged message. | Ob du Naturwissenschaften oder Sprachen wählst, deine Neugier hilft dir. |
| Indirect question | A question or uncertainty about which alternative applies. | Ich frage mich, ob du Naturwissenschaften oder Sprachen wählst. |
| Either-or choice | Entweder A oder B. | Du wählst entweder Naturwissenschaften oder Sprachen. |
