Supporting a first peaceful demonstration in German
Support a teenager’s first peaceful demonstration while agreeing on practical safeguards. Use vorausgesetzt, dass (“provided that”) to make a clear prerequisite for support, permission or willingness.
What you'll learn
- Express support and independence alongside clear, negotiated prerequisites.
- Place the finite verb at the end of the dass clause.
- Put the prerequisite before or after the main statement.
- Distinguish an explicit prerequisite from a general possibility.
German phrases for supporting a first peaceful demonstration
Ich unterstütze deine Teilnahme, vorausgesetzt, dass die Versammlung friedlich bleibt.
I support you attending, provided that the gathering remains peaceful.
The prerequisite follows the statement of support; bleibt ends the dass clause.
Vorausgesetzt, dass wir vereinbaren, wie wir in Kontakt bleiben, kannst du selbstständig hingehen.
Provided that we agree on contact arrangements, you can go independently.
The prerequisite comes first. Within it, vereinbaren ends the core dass clause before the added detail about contact.
Ich bin mit dem Plan einverstanden, vorausgesetzt, dass du die Organisatoren kennst.
I'm comfortable with the plan, provided that you know the organisers.
Knowing the organisers is an explicit prerequisite for agreement; kennst comes last.
Vorausgesetzt, dass du einen Weg aus der Menschenmenge heraus hast, machen mir Menschenmengen weniger Sorgen.
Provided that you have an exit route, crowds worry me less.
The initial prerequisite specifies what would reduce the parent’s concern; hast ends the dass clause.
Du kannst für die Reden bleiben, vorausgesetzt, dass die öffentlichen Verkehrsmittel fahren.
You can stay for the speeches, provided that transport is running.
Here, transport is understood as public transport. The permission depends on services running.
Vorausgesetzt, dass mich niemand unter Druck setzt, möchte ich ein Plakat tragen.
Provided that nobody pressures me, I'd like to carry a placard.
The teenager states a personal prerequisite: participation should be freely chosen.
Ich werde deine Entscheidung respektieren, vorausgesetzt, dass du die Risiken bedacht hast.
I'll respect your choice, provided that you've considered the risks.
The finite verb hast comes last, after bedacht.
Vorausgesetzt, dass wir das in Ruhe besprechen, bin ich bereit, noch einmal darüber nachzudenken.
Provided that we discuss this calmly, I'm willing to reconsider.
A calm discussion is the prerequisite for reconsidering; besprechen ends the dass clause.

An explicit prerequisite
Vorausgesetzt, dass means “provided that.” It makes the main statement dependent on a specific requirement, rather than simply raising a possible situation. In a family discussion, it can frame the safeguard on which support or permission depends.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Support with a prerequisite | Statement, vorausgesetzt, dass + prerequisite | Ich unterstütze deine Teilnahme, vorausgesetzt, dass die Versammlung friedlich bleibt. |
| Willingness with a prerequisite | Vorausgesetzt, dass + prerequisite, main statement | Vorausgesetzt, dass wir das in Ruhe besprechen, bin ich bereit, noch einmal darüber nachzudenken. |
Verb placement inside the prerequisite
In the dass clause, the finite verb goes at the end. With a completed action expressed by bedacht hast, the finite verb hast follows the participle. Keep the comma between vorausgesetzt and dass.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Single finite verb | dass + subject + other information + finite verb | …, vorausgesetzt, dass du die Organisatoren kennst. |
| Completed action | dass + subject + other information + participle + finite verb | …, vorausgesetzt, dass du die Risiken bedacht hast. |
Before or after the main statement
Put the prerequisite last to lead with reassurance or permission. Put it first to foreground the agreed requirement. In the fronted pattern shown here, the main clause starts with its finite verb; an explicit dann (“then”) can also introduce it.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Permission first | Main statement, vorausgesetzt, dass … | Du kannst bleiben, vorausgesetzt, dass die öffentlichen Verkehrsmittel fahren. |
| Prerequisite first | Vorausgesetzt, dass …, finite verb + subject … | Vorausgesetzt, dass die öffentlichen Verkehrsmittel fahren, kannst du bleiben. |
| With explicit dann | Vorausgesetzt, dass …, dann + finite verb + subject … | Vorausgesetzt, dass die öffentlichen Verkehrsmittel fahren, dann kannst du bleiben. |
