Expressing causes in a tighter form in German

Use aufgrund, infolge and angesichts with genitive noun phrases to express causes compactly. These forms suit careful explanations, school correspondence and formal discussions: aufgrund gives grounds, infolge highlights consequences, and angesichts frames a judgement in light of circumstances.

What you'll learn

  • Choose the preposition that best expresses grounds, consequences or circumstances motivating a judgement.
  • Use genitive noun phrases after aufgrund, infolge and angesichts.
  • Replace causal clauses with concise noun phrases without changing the intended causal relationship.
  • Place a causal phrase first to foreground the reason.

German phrases for expressing causes in a tighter form

  • Angesichts der Unsicherheit würde ich vermeiden, einen festen Termin zuzusagen.

Given the uncertainty, I would avoid promising a definite date.

Angesichts presents uncertainty as the circumstance motivating caution.

  • Die Debatte wurde aufgrund der Erkrankung des Redners verschoben.

The debate was postponed because of the speaker's illness.

Aufgrund identifies the grounds for postponement. Der Erkrankung is the genitive phrase governed by the preposition.

  • Infolge des Stromausfalls sind mehrere Dienste weiterhin nicht verfügbar.

Following the power failure, several services remain unavailable.

Infolge makes the causal reading explicit: the unavailability is a consequence of the power failure, not merely something happening later.

  • Angesichts der Nachfrage erscheint ein zusätzlicher Termin sinnvoll.

Given the demand, an additional session seems reasonable.

Angesichts frames demand as the basis for judging an additional session worthwhile.

  • Aufgrund widersprüchlicher Belege bleibt die Schlussfolgerung vorläufig.

Because of conflicting evidence, the conclusion remains provisional.

Widersprüchlicher Belege is genitive plural without an article; aufgrund supplies the reason.

  • Der Weg ist infolge des gestrigen Starkregens nicht zugänglich.

The path is inaccessible following yesterday's heavy rainfall.

Infolge highlights the effect of the rainfall. The genitive phrase is des gestrigen Starkregens.

  • Könnten wir angesichts der Kosten das vorgeschlagene Format noch einmal überdenken?

Given the expense, could we reconsider the proposed format?

Angesichts introduces the costs as circumstances motivating reconsideration.

  • Diese Erklärung klingt klarer, wenn die Ursache zuerst genannt wird.

That explanation sounds clearer with the cause stated first.

This describes the purpose of fronting a causal phrase: the listener encounters the reason before the result.

Choose the causal relationship

These prepositions overlap, but they foreground different relationships. Aufgrund states grounds or a reason; infolge stresses a resulting effect; angesichts means 'in view of' and commonly motivates an assessment or response. Infolge is not a purely temporal equivalent of 'after'.

UseFormExample
Grounds or reasonaufgrund + genitiveDie Debatte wurde aufgrund der Erkrankung des Redners verschoben.
Cause producing a consequenceinfolge + genitiveInfolge des Stromausfalls sind mehrere Dienste weiterhin nicht verfügbar.
Circumstances motivating a judgementangesichts + genitiveAngesichts der Nachfrage erscheint ein zusätzlicher Termin sinnvoll.

Build the genitive phrase

Use the genitive after all three prepositions in this formal pattern. Masculine and neuter singular nouns generally add -(e)s with des; feminine singular and plural phrases use der. Without an article, a plural adjective can mark the genitive with -er.

UseFormExample
Masculine singularinfolge + des + noun with -(e)sinfolge des Stromausfalls
Neuter singularaufgrund + des + noun with -(e)saufgrund des Wetters
Feminine singularangesichts + der + nounangesichts der Unsicherheit
Plural with an articleangesichts + der + plural nounangesichts der Kosten
Plural without an articleaufgrund + adjective in -er + plural nounaufgrund widersprüchlicher Belege

Compress a causal clause

Replace the causal clause with a noun phrase naming the same cause, then choose the appropriate preposition. Preserve important details such as whose illness it is or when the rain fell. The noun phrase has no finite verb, so retain any timing that matters through words such as gestrig.

UseFormExample

Put the cause first

A fronted causal noun phrase foregrounds the reason and occupies the first position of a statement. The finite verb follows the complete phrase. Unlike a causal clause, this introductory prepositional phrase is not normally separated by a comma.

UseFormExample
Reason laterstatement + causal phraseDie Debatte wurde aufgrund der Erkrankung des Redners verschoben.
Reason firstcausal phrase + finite verb + subject + remainderAufgrund der Erkrankung des Redners wurde die Debatte verschoben.
