C1 first milestone in German
Bring C1 precision to a supportive family discussion about joining a youth advisory panel. This milestone reviews familiar ways to report claims, assess responsibilities and express a balanced judgement; it introduces no new grammar.
What you'll learn
- Report the organiser’s claims without presenting them as established facts.
- Interpret formal wording about participant selection, responsibilities and commitments.
- Distinguish active, completed or passive, and required actions in attributive phrases.
- Express qualified support, raise concerns and weigh likely demands using familiar C1 structures.
German phrases for c1 first milestone
Der Organisator sagt, der Jugendbeirat habe echten Einfluss auf Entscheidungen vor Ort.
The organiser says the panel has genuine influence over local decisions.
Habe is present Konjunktiv I: it attributes the claim to the organiser without implying disbelief.
Die Auswahl der Teilnehmenden muss transparent begründet werden.
The selection of participants needs a transparent explanation.
Die Auswahl der Teilnehmenden packages the action of selecting participants into a noun phrase with a genitive complement.
Die in der Einladung beschriebenen Aufgaben klingen anspruchsvoll.
The responsibilities described in the invitation sound substantial.
In der Einladung beschriebenen is an extended Partizip II attribute: the responsibilities are described in the invitation.
Die verschiedene Stadtviertel vertretenden Jugendlichen würden wertvolle Perspektiven einbringen.
Young people representing different neighbourhoods would bring valuable perspectives.
Vertretenden is an active Partizip I attribute. This compact wording suits a formal discussion of the proposal.
Ich würde deine Mitarbeit insofern unterstützen, als der Aufwand überschaubar bleibt.
I'd support your involvement insofar as the commitment remains manageable.
Insofern … als limits the support to the stated respect: a manageable commitment. It is more carefully qualified than an unrestricted promise of support.
Könntest du bei der Informationsveranstaltung die Bedenken hinsichtlich der Barrierefreiheit zur Sprache bringen?
Could you bring the accessibility concerns up at the briefing?
Etwas zur Sprache bringen is the fixed expression for raising an issue.
Der Vorschlag ist vielversprechend, wenn auch vermutlich anspruchsvoller, als er auf den ersten Blick wirkt.
The proposal is promising, though probably more demanding than it appears.
Wenn auch introduces an elliptical concession. Vermutlich conveys probability here; epistemic dürfte offers another way to express that assessment.
Lass uns die zu erfüllenden Verpflichtungen abwägen, bevor du dich bewirbst.
Let's consider the commitments to be honoured before you apply.
Zu erfüllenden is a gerundive attribute: these are commitments that must be fulfilled, not commitments performing an action.

Review: reporting present claims
Use present Konjunktiv I to keep a third-person singular claim attributed to its source. It signals reporting, not automatic doubt.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Haben | habe | Der Organisator sagt, der Beirat habe echten Einfluss. |
| Sein | sei | Er erklärt, die Mitarbeit sei wichtig. |
| Lexical verb | verb stem + -e | Er sagt, der Beirat vertrete die Interessen der Jugendlichen. |
Review: nominal style
A deverbal noun can present an action as a topic for discussion. With -ung nouns, a genitive complement often identifies what the action concerns.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Action to noun phrase | die Teilnehmenden auswählen → die Auswahl der Teilnehmenden | Die Auswahl der Teilnehmenden braucht eine klare Begründung. |
| Another familiar pattern | die Verpflichtungen erfüllen → die Erfüllung der Verpflichtungen | Die Erfüllung der Verpflichtungen kostet Zeit. |
Review: three kinds of participial attribute
Place an attribute’s complements before the participle and give the participle an adjective ending. Check whether the noun receives an action, performs it, or is subject to an action that is required or possible.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Partizip II: completed or passive | article + complements + Partizip II with ending + noun | die in der Einladung beschriebenen Aufgaben |
| Partizip I: ongoing active | article + complements + infinitive + -d + ending + noun | die verschiedene Stadtviertel vertretenden Jugendlichen |
| Gerundive: required action here | article + zu + Partizip I with ending + noun | die zu erfüllenden Verpflichtungen |
Review: limiting and qualifying a judgement
Insofern … als specifies the respect in which a statement holds; it is not simply interchangeable with conditional sofern. Elliptical wenn auch adds a concession without a full finite clause.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Restrictive specification | insofern …, als + clause with final finite verb | Die Mitarbeit ist insofern wertvoll, als du eigene Ideen einbringen kannst. |
| Elliptical concession | wenn auch + qualifying phrase | Der Vorschlag ist vielversprechend, wenn auch anspruchsvoll. |
Review: fixed verbal expressions
Recall each expression as a whole, including its case and article pattern. In a modal construction, the fixed expression’s infinitive comes at the end.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Raise an issue | etwas (accusative) zur Sprache bringen | Du könntest die Bedenken zur Sprache bringen. |
| Consider | etwas (accusative) in Betracht ziehen | Wir ziehen deine Mitarbeit in Betracht. |
| Question | etwas (accusative) in Frage stellen | Wir stellen den Nutzen des Beirats nicht in Frage. |
| Reach a decision | zu einer Entscheidung kommen | Nach dem Gespräch kommen wir zu einer Entscheidung. |
Review: cautious probability with dürfte
Epistemic dürfte plus infinitive expresses a reasoned expectation: something is probably the case. It does not grant permission and is stronger than merely suggesting a hypothetical possibility with könnte.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Probable assessment | dürfte + infinitive | Die Mitarbeit dürfte anspruchsvoller sein, als sie zunächst wirkt. |
