How certain does the evidence make us? in German

Use dürfte plus an infinitive to say what the evidence makes likely, without presenting an inference as a proven fact. Practise discussing figures, examples and results with thoughtful, measured confidence.

What you'll learn

  • Express cautious probability with dürfte plus an infinitive.
  • Distinguish an evidence-based inference from permission and a merely possible scenario.
  • Discuss limited evidence without sounding more certain than it justifies.

German phrases for how certain does the evidence make us?

  • Diese Zahl dürfte eher eine Schätzung als das Ergebnis einer genauen Zählung sein.

That figure is probably an estimate rather than an exact count.

Dürfte … sein presents the interpretation as likely, not established.

  • Die Abweichung dürfte auf unterschiedliche Zählmethoden zurückgehen.

The discrepancy is likely to reflect different counting methods.

Dürfte … zurückgehen cautiously identifies a likely explanation.

  • Ein einzelnes Beispiel dürfte uns nur sehr wenig sagen.

A single example probably tells us very little.

The cautious judgement concerns how informative one example is.

  • Die tatsächliche Erklärung dürfte komplizierter sein.

The actual explanation is likely to be more complicated.

Dürfte softens the claim while still indicating that it is likely.

  • Bei der dünnen Beweislage dürfte diese Schlussfolgerung verfrüht sein.

That conclusion is probably premature given the limited evidence.

The limited evidence provides the basis for the cautious judgement.

The pattern is likely to matter more than one unusual result.

Dürfte … sein marks the comparison as a reasoned assessment.

Dürfte plus infinitive: a cautious inference

Epistemic dürfte means 'is probably' or 'is likely to': it expresses the speaker's assessment of how likely a claim is. Although formally Konjunktiv II of dürfen, it does not express past time here. It signals probability, not proof or a fixed numerical confidence level.

UseFormExample
Basic frameSubject + dürfte + … + infinitive without zuDie Erklärung dürfte komplizierter sein.
Plural subjectPlural subject + dürften + … + infinitiveDie Ergebnisse dürften ein ähnliches Muster zeigen.
Likely explanationSubject + dürfte + … + zurückgehenDie Abweichung dürfte auf unterschiedliche Zählmethoden zurückgehen.

Probability, permission or mere possibility?

Interpret the modal in context. Epistemic dürfte assesses whether something is likely to be true; permission concerns whether an action is allowed. Compared with könnte, dürfte normally commits the speaker more strongly to an outcome: likely rather than merely possible.

UseFormExample
Reasoned probabilitydürfte + infinitive: probablyDiese Zahl dürfte stimmen. — This figure is probably correct.
Permission, not probabilitydürfen / polite dürfte: be allowed toDürfte ich die Zahlen ansehen? — May I look at the figures?
