Finding the right register for a serious discussion in German
Use four established German verb–noun combinations to consider options, raise concerns, question assumptions and reach decisions. These expressions give serious family discussions a measured, confident tone without making them impersonal.
What you'll learn
- Use in Betracht ziehen, zur Sprache bringen, in Frage stellen and zu einer Entscheidung kommen naturally in serious discussions.
- Distinguish accusative objects from the fixed prepositional parts of these expressions.
- Retain or omit articles as each expression requires.
- Place these expressions correctly around the German sentence bracket.
German phrases for finding the right register for a serious discussion
Könnten wir eine weniger einschneidende Alternative in Betracht ziehen?
Could we take a less disruptive alternative into consideration?
Eine weniger einschneidende Alternative is the accusative object of in Betracht ziehen. The expression suggests considering an option, not accepting it.
Ich möchte ein Bedenken zur Sprache bringen, bevor wir uns festlegen.
I'd like to raise a concern before we commit ourselves.
Ein Bedenken names one specific concern. Zur Sprache bringen is measured and direct, without sounding accusatory.
Ich stelle die Annahme in Frage, nicht dein Urteilsvermögen.
I'm questioning the assumption, not your ability to judge.
In Frage stellen targets the validity of something. The contrast keeps the challenge focused on the assumption rather than the person.
Wir müssen heute Abend nicht zu einer Entscheidung kommen.
We don't have to reach a decision this evening.
Zu einer Entscheidung kommen describes reaching an outcome. Einer Entscheidung is dative after zu.
Diese Möglichkeit verdient es, in Betracht gezogen zu werden, auch wenn sie unwahrscheinlich erscheint.
That possibility deserves consideration, even if it seems unlikely.
The fixed words in Betracht remain unchanged in in Betracht gezogen zu werden. This wording is somewhat more formal but still suitable for a thoughtful discussion.
Danke, dass du das zugrunde liegende Problem so ruhig zur Sprache gebracht hast.
Thank you for bringing the underlying problem up so calmly.
Zur Sprache gebracht retains the fixed zur. Thanking someone for their calm delivery helps maintain a constructive tone.
Ein enttäuschendes Ergebnis stellt nicht gleich den gesamten Ansatz in Frage.
One disappointing result doesn't call the entire approach into question.
Den gesamten Ansatz is the accusative object. Nicht gleich conveys that one setback need not immediately undermine the whole approach.
Lass uns zu einer Entscheidung kommen, hinter der wir beide stehen können.
Let's reach a decision we can both stand behind.
Zu einer Entscheidung kommen frames the outcome as a shared conclusion rather than a decision imposed by one person.

Fixed frames and case
Learn each combination as a complete frame. In the first three, the thing being considered, raised or questioned is an accusative object. The prepositional phrase is a separate, fixed part of the expression. Zu einer Entscheidung kommen has no accusative object.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Consider something | etwas (accusative) in Betracht ziehen | Wir ziehen einen anderen Plan in Betracht. |
| Raise something for discussion | etwas (accusative) zur Sprache bringen | Wir bringen den Konflikt zur Sprache. |
| Call something into question | etwas (accusative) in Frage stellen | Wir stellen den Vorschlag in Frage. |
| Reach a decision | zu + dative: zu einer Entscheidung kommen | Wir kommen zu einer Entscheidung. |
Articles belong to the expression
Do not add or remove articles freely. In Betracht and in Frage are fixed articleless phrases with in plus accusative. Zur Sprache contains the definite article: zur = zu der, with dative. Zu einer Entscheidung normally retains an article or another determiner.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| No article | in Betracht | Das ziehen wir in Betracht. |
| No article | in Frage | Das stellen wir nicht in Frage. |
| Contracted definite article | zur Sprache = zu der Sprache | Ich bringe das Thema zur Sprache. |
| Indefinite article with dative | zu einer Entscheidung | Wir sind zu einer Entscheidung gekommen. |
Placement in the sentence bracket
These expressions are several words, not separable verbs. In a simple main clause, the finite verb occupies its usual early position and the fixed prepositional phrase typically comes late. With a modal or perfect auxiliary, the infinitive or participle closes the bracket. In a subordinate clause, the verbal elements come at the end.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Simple main clause | ziehen … in Betracht | Wir ziehen auch einen späteren Termin in Betracht. |
| Modal bracket | möchte … zur Sprache bringen | Ich möchte dieses Problem heute zur Sprache bringen. |
| Perfect bracket | haben … in Frage gestellt | Wir haben nur die Annahme in Frage gestellt. |
| Subordinate clause | … zu einer Entscheidung gekommen sind | Ich bin froh, dass wir zu einer Entscheidung gekommen sind. |
