Decoding a sixth-form options letter in German

Formal letters about sixth-form subject choices often pack important details into phrases before a noun. Learn to unpack these extended Partizip II attributes so you and your teenager can distinguish requirements, recommendations and agreed arrangements.

What you'll learn

  • Identify the noun modified by an extended Partizip II phrase.
  • Recognise who made a recommendation, where a requirement is stated and which applicants an arrangement concerns.
  • Place complements before the participle and apply the appropriate adjective ending.
  • Interpret passive or completed meaning without treating every recommendation as a commitment.

German phrases for decoding a sixth-form options letter

  • Gelten die im Schreiben genannten Zugangsvoraussetzungen für alle?

Do the entry requirements listed in the letter apply to everyone?

The complement im Schreiben precedes genannten; the whole phrase modifies Zugangsvoraussetzungen.

  • Die von deinem Tutor empfohlenen Fächer sind nicht deine einzigen Wahlmöglichkeiten.

The subjects recommended by your tutor aren't your only options.

Von deinem Tutor identifies the person making the recommendation. Empfohlenen describes the subjects as recommended, not compulsory.

  • Lass uns die im beigefügten Dokument angegebene Frist überprüfen.

Let's check the deadline specified in the attached document.

Im beigefügten Dokument comes before angegebene. Within that complement, beigefügten also modifies a noun: Dokument.

  • Die bei der Besprechung vereinbarten Regelungen scheinen von diesen hier abzuweichen.

The arrangements agreed at the meeting seem different from these.

Bei der Besprechung locates the agreement; vereinbarten presents the arrangements as already agreed.

  • Sind die von der Schule anerkannten Qualifikationen irgendwo aufgeführt?

Are the qualifications recognised by the school listed anywhere?

Von der Schule anerkannten modifies Qualifikationen. It identifies whose recognition matters.

  • Die für externe Bewerberinnen und Bewerber reservierten Plätze können sich auf die Verfügbarkeit auswirken.

The places reserved for external applicants may affect availability.

Für externe Bewerberinnen und Bewerber precedes reservierten and identifies the group for whom the places are reserved.

  • Die im Schreiben vorgeschlagene Fächerkombination würde deine Wahlmöglichkeiten einschränken.

The combination suggested in the letter would limit your choices.

Vorgeschlagene modifies the singular feminine noun Fächerkombination. A proposal is not necessarily a requirement.

  • Ich würde die hier dargelegten Bedingungen hinterfragen, bevor ich irgendetwas unterschreibe.

I'd query the conditions outlined here before signing anything.

Even the short complement hier goes before the participle: hier dargelegten Bedingungen.

Unpack the phrase from the noun backwards

Find the head noun, then the participle immediately before it. The preceding complements tell you where, when, by whom or for whom something was done. English commonly places this information after the noun; German places the complete attribute before it, without commas.

UseFormExample
Location or sourcearticle + location/source + Partizip II with ending + noundie im Schreiben genannten Zugangsvoraussetzungen
Person or institution responsiblearticle + von-complement + Partizip II with ending + noundie von der Schule anerkannten Qualifikationen
Intended grouparticle + für-complement + Partizip II with ending + noundie für externe Bewerberinnen und Bewerber reservierten Plätze

Add an adjective ending to the participle

An attributive Partizip II takes adjective endings determined by the head noun's case, gender and number and its determiner. The words inside the extended attribute do not determine that ending. Thus Schreiben does not control genannten in die im Schreiben genannten Voraussetzungen.

UseFormExample
Feminine singular after die, nominative or accusativeangegeben + -edie im Dokument angegebene Frist
Plural after die, nominative or accusativeempfohlen + -endie von deinem Tutor empfohlenen Fächer
Feminine singular after der, dativevereinbart + -enmit der bei der Besprechung vereinbarten Regelung
Plural without an article, nominative or accusativeanerkannt + -evon der Schule anerkannte Qualifikationen

Read passive or completed meaning accurately

In these letters, the noun usually receives the action: subjects are recommended and places are reserved. Partizip II can describe a completed action or a resulting status; it does not by itself specify an exact past time. The participle's meaning also matters: recommended, agreed and required are not interchangeable.

UseFormExample
Passive relationshiprecommended by someonedie von deinem Tutor empfohlenen Fächer
Result of an agreementalready agreed at the meetingdie bei der Besprechung vereinbarten Regelungen
Current recognised statusrecognised by the schooldie von der Schule anerkannten Qualifikationen
