Unpacking dense official wording in German

Official German often packages actions into nouns: den Antrag prüfen becomes die Prüfung des Antrags. Learn to find the action inside these phrases, identify what it affects, and turn dense wording into clearer explanations without changing its meaning.

What you'll learn

  • Recognise common action nouns ending in -ung.
  • Transform verb–object expressions into nominal phrases with genitive complements.
  • Unpack formal nominal phrases into clear verbal explanations.
  • Distinguish what official wording actually confirms from what it leaves unstated.

German phrases for unpacking dense official wording

  • Heißt „Bestätigung des Eingangs“, dass sie es tatsächlich angenommen haben?

Does 'confirmation of receipt' mean they have actually accepted it?

Bestätigung des Eingangs packages den Eingang bestätigen into a noun phrase. It confirms arrival, not necessarily acceptance or approval.

  • Die Ablehnung des Antrags hat mich unvorbereitet getroffen.

The rejection of the application caught me off guard.

Den Antrag ablehnen becomes die Ablehnung des Antrags. The application is what is rejected.

  • Ihre Erklärung des Verfahrens lässt mehrere Fragen offen.

Their explanation of the procedure leaves several questions unanswered.

Das Verfahren erklären becomes die Erklärung des Verfahrens. Ihre identifies whose explanation it is.

  • Die Verlängerung der Frist verschafft uns etwas Luft.

The extension of the deadline gives us some breathing space.

Die Frist verlängern becomes die Verlängerung der Frist: someone extends the deadline.

  • Mit „Prüfung der Anspruchsberechtigung“ meinen sie, dass geprüft wird, ob man die Voraussetzungen erfüllt.

By 'verification of eligibility', they mean checking whether you qualify.

The verbal explanation makes the abstract phrase concrete: checking whether the relevant requirements are met.

  • Die Streichung der Fördermittel hätte schwerwiegende Folgen.

The withdrawal of funding would have serious consequences.

Die Fördermittel streichen becomes die Streichung der Fördermittel. Here, Streichung means cutting or withdrawing the funding.

  • Können wir „Einreichung der Unterlagen“ durch etwas Verständlicheres ersetzen?

Can we replace 'submission of documentation' with something clearer?

Die Unterlagen einreichen is the action behind Einreichung der Unterlagen. A direct instruction such as Bitte reichen Sie die Unterlagen ein is often clearer.

  • Die Bewertung der Belege ist wichtiger als die Formulierung.

The assessment of the evidence matters more than the wording.

Die Belege bewerten becomes die Bewertung der Belege. Belege means supporting evidence or documents here.

Package an action as an -ung noun

Many verbs have a related noun ending in -ung. These nouns are feminine and form their plural in -en. Learn the established noun rather than adding -ung to every verb: not every verb allows this formation.

UseFormExample
Simple formationprüfen → die Prüfungden Antrag prüfen → die Prüfung des Antrags
Keep the prefixablehnen → die Ablehnungden Antrag ablehnen → die Ablehnung des Antrags
Established stem formverlängern → die Verlängerungdie Frist verlängern → die Verlängerung der Frist

Turn the object into a genitive complement

In these patterns, the verb's accusative object becomes a genitive complement after the action noun. It names what is checked, extended, submitted or assessed. Masculine and neuter singular nouns generally add -(e)s; feminine and plural nouns do not add a genitive ending.

UseFormExample
Masculine singularden Antrag → des Antragsden Antrag ablehnen → die Ablehnung des Antrags
Neuter singulardas Verfahren → des Verfahrensdas Verfahren erklären → die Erklärung des Verfahrens
Feminine singulardie Frist → der Fristdie Frist verlängern → die Verlängerung der Frist
Pluraldie Unterlagen → der Unterlagendie Unterlagen einreichen → die Einreichung der Unterlagen

Unpack the phrase without adding claims

Find the underlying verb, turn the genitive complement back into its object, and identify the actor only if the context supplies one. Nominal phrases often leave the actor and timing unstated. A genitive can also identify an actor, so check the meaning rather than treating every genitive as an object.

UseFormExample
Recover the actiondie Bewertung der Belege → die Belege bewertenDie Stelle bewertet die Belege.
Recover an actor only from contextdie Prüfung des Antrags → jemand prüft den AntragIf the letter identifies the office: Die Behörde prüft den Antrag.
Distinguish actor and objectdie Erklärung der Behörde / die Erklärung des VerfahrensDie Behörde erklärt etwas. / Jemand erklärt das Verfahren.
Preserve the scopedie Bestätigung des Eingangs → den Eingang bestätigenSie bestätigen den Eingang. Das bedeutet noch keine Zusage.

More examples

Die Prüfung des Antrags dauert noch an. Klarer: Die Behörde prüft den Antrag noch.

The examination of the application is still ongoing. More clearly: The authority is still checking the application.

The clearer version assumes that the authority is the actor identified in context.

Die Verlängerung der Frist hilft uns. Anders gesagt: Es hilft uns, dass die Frist verlängert wird.

The extension of the deadline helps us. In other words: It helps us that the deadline is being extended.

The verbal version keeps the actor unspecified.

Bitte reichen Sie die Unterlagen ein. Nominal: Wir bitten um die Einreichung der Unterlagen.

Please submit the documents. In nominal style: We request the submission of the documents.

Both convey the same request; the noun-based version sounds more administrative.

Die Bestätigung des Eingangs bedeutet nur, dass die Unterlagen angekommen sind.

Confirmation of receipt only means that the documents have arrived.

Unpacking the phrase prevents receipt from being confused with approval.
