Making peace with a parent's imperfect example in German

Practise acknowledging your own mistakes without abandoning shared values. Free supplementary participial clauses let you express reflection, motivation or circumstances compactly. They often sound more reflective or written than everyday conversation.

What you'll learn

  • Acknowledge how inconsistent behaviour can affect a child's trust.
  • Use Partizip I to express an accompanying activity or stance and Partizip II to express a resulting state or circumstance.
  • Keep the understood subject of a free participial clause aligned with the main-clause subject.
  • Distinguish uninflected supplementary participles from participles that modify nouns.

German phrases for making peace with a parent's imperfect example

  • Rückblickend verstehe ich, warum mein Verhalten als Vorbild dich verwirrt hat.

Looking back, I can see why my example confused you.

Rückblickend expresses the speaker's present reflection: ich is both looking back and understanding.

  • Überrumpelt, habe ich etwas verteidigt, woran ich selbst nicht mehr glaube.

Caught off guard, I defended something I no longer believe.

Überrumpelt describes the state of ich when the defensive reaction occurred.

  • Darauf hoffend, konsequent zu wirken, habe ich vermieden zuzugeben, dass ich mich geändert hatte.

Hoping to seem consistent, I avoided admitting I'd changed.

Hoffend refers to ich and introduces the motivation behind the avoidance. This compact phrasing sounds deliberately reflective.

  • Von meinen eigenen Erfahrungen geblendet, habe ich deine Sichtweise abgetan.

Blinded by my own experience, I dismissed your perspective.

Geblendet describes the speaker's impaired judgement, not a problem with the child's perspective.

  • Ehrlich gesagt habe ich nicht immer nach diesem Grundsatz gelebt.

Speaking honestly, I haven't always lived by that principle.

Ehrlich gesagt is the natural German expression here. It is a fixed speaker-oriented formula, not a regular same-subject participial clause.

  • Durch deine Augen betrachtet, wirkt meine Reaktion unnötig hart.

Seen through your eyes, my reaction seems unnecessarily harsh.

Meine Reaktion is both what is viewed and what seems harsh. The passive meaning of betrachtet keeps the subject reference aligned.

  • Durch deine Offenheit ermutigt, versuche ich, weniger defensiv zu reagieren.

Encouraged by your openness, I'm trying to be less defensive.

Ermutigt describes ich and presents the child's openness as encouragement for change.

  • An meine eigenen Fehler denkend, schulde ich dir mehr Geduld.

Bearing my own mistakes in mind, I owe you more patience.

Denkend refers to ich. The phrasing is reflective and somewhat literary, suitable for a carefully considered acknowledgement.

Partizip I: accompanying activity or stance

A free Partizip I phrase expresses what the main-clause subject is doing or considering alongside the main statement. It has no expressed subject of its own. Its time reference comes from the context, not from a separate tense.

UseFormExample
ReflectionRückblickend + main clauseRückblickend verstehe ich deine Verwirrung.
MotivationDarauf hoffend, … + main clauseDarauf hoffend, konsequent zu wirken, habe ich meine Zweifel verschwiegen.
Accompanying thoughtAn … denkend + main clauseAn meine eigenen Fehler denkend, will ich geduldiger reagieren.

Partizip II: state or circumstance

A free Partizip II phrase often describes a resulting state or something experienced by the main-clause subject. It does not by itself place the main statement in the past.

UseFormExample
An experienced stateVon … überrascht + main clauseVon deiner Frage überrascht, habe ich vorschnell geantwortet.
EncouragementDurch … ermutigt + main clauseDurch deine Offenheit ermutigt, spreche ich über meine Fehler.
Passive perspectiveDurch deine Augen betrachtet + main clauseDurch deine Augen betrachtet, wirkt meine Reaktion unnötig hart.

Subject alignment, endings and punctuation

Check who is acting or whose state is described: that referent should be the main-clause subject. Supplementary participles take no adjective endings. Fronted participial phrases are followed directly by the finite main-clause verb. Commas can mark them as supplementary; short integrated forms such as rückblickend usually appear without a comma.

UseFormExample
