Weighing a gap-year organisation's promises in German

Evaluate promises about overseas volunteering by reporting who says what will happen. Konjunktiv I future (werde + infinitive) attributes commitments and predictions to their source without presenting them as verified facts.

What you'll learn

  • Report future commitments and predictions using werde + infinitive.
  • Place werde correctly in reported clauses with and without dass.
  • Distinguish future reporting from reports about present circumstances or completed events.
  • Ask for confirmation of promised support before making a commitment.

German phrases for weighing a gap-year organisation's promises

The coordinator says she will arrange your accommodation locally.

Sie werde … organisieren attributes the future arrangement to the coordinator. Vor Ort means locally or at the destination.

The organisation states that it will provide language support.

In the dass clause, the infinitive anbieten precedes the clause-final werde.

  • Der Berater sagt, der Freiwilligeneinsatz werde praktische Fähigkeiten fördern.

The adviser says the placement will develop practical skills.

Werde … fördern reports a predicted benefit, not a guaranteed outcome.

The host promises that someone will meet you on arrival.

In Empfang nehmen means to meet or receive someone on arrival. The promise is attributed to the host.

The brochure claims the project will benefit the wider community.

Werde … zugutekommen reports the predicted benefit. Behauptet conveys the source phrase's more questioning ‘claims’.

The representative says the fee will cover emergency assistance.

Werde … abdecken reports what the fee is said to include; it does not establish the scope of that assistance.

The director assures us that the team will review complaints independently.

Das Team is singular, so werde clearly marks the reported future commitment.

Could we get confirmation of what the organisation says it will provide?

Nach eigenen Angaben means ‘according to its own statements’. In the was clause, bereitstellen werde comes at the end.

Attributing future commitments and predictions

Use the Konjunktiv I form of werden plus an infinitive to report what a source says will happen. With the third-person singular subjects used here, the form is werde. This marks attribution, not automatic disbelief, and does not itself make a promise reliable.

UseFormExample
Future commitmentsingular subject + werde + … + infinitiveDie Koordinatorin sagt, sie werde deine Unterkunft organisieren.
Future predictionsingular subject + werde + … + infinitiveDer Berater sagt, der Einsatz werde praktische Fähigkeiten fördern.
From direct promise to reported promisewir werden anbieten → die Organisation werde anbieten„Wir werden Unterstützung anbieten.“ → Die Organisation erklärt, sie werde Unterstützung anbieten.

Word order in reported future clauses

Without dass, werde occupies the second position in the reported clause and the infinitive comes at the end. With dass, werde moves to the end, after the infinitive. The same final sequence occurs in the embedded was clause used to ask what is promised.

UseFormExample
Without dass…, subject + werde + …
Asking what will be provided…, was + subject + …

Keeping future reporting distinct

Choose werde + infinitive when explicitly reporting a future commitment or prediction. Present reporting describes a current situation or practice; perfect reporting describes an earlier completed event. Present forms can also have future reference in context, but werde + infinitive makes the future perspective explicit.

UseFormExample

Present practice: contrast onlypresent reporting formDie Organisation erklärt, sie biete Unterstützung an.
